Kirsten Bennett '11, a producer with KOAA-TV in Pueblo/Colorado Springs, Colo., was one of two people honored at the station by the Heartland chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for their newscast following last year's theater shooting that killed 12 and injured 58 in the Denver suburb of Aurora.

The Heartland Emmy Awards ceremony recognized their hour-long breaking newscast with an award for "Best Evening Newscast" in a medium market. Bennett was honored alongside Executive Producer Jeremy Downing.

Bennett joined the NBC affiliate KOAA-TV in June 2011 after her graduation from the School of Communications. It is her first professional award; Bennett won a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences student newscast award in 2011 with Phoenix14News, now Elon Local News.

She had been nominated twice this year in the same category. The other nomination was for a News 5 at 6:30 p.m. program, a contemporary fast-paced newscast she helped launch at the station in August 2012.
