Matt Valle named Martha and Spencer Love Term Professor

The professor of management has been named the Martha and Spencer Love Term Professor in Business, an honor established by a gift from The Martha and Spencer Love Foundation.

Matt Valle, professor of management, was named Love Term Professor.

As the Love Term Professor, Matt Valle will work with faculty colleagues and provide leadership in enhancing the research profile of the Love School of Business.

Valle is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and is a former Air Force pilot. He earned an M.S. in operations management from the University of Arkansas, an M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts and a Ph.D. in business administration from Florida State University. He teaches management courses at the undergraduate, graduate (M.B.A.) and executive levels.  In 2010-11, he served as the Distinguished Visiting Professor in Management at the United States Air Force Academy.

Valle’s research interests include investigations of organizational politics and the phenomenon of abusive supervision. He has published more than 75 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Human Relations, the Journal of Managerial Issues, the Journal of Management Inquiry and the Journal of Small Business Strategy. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Management Research and the Journal of Character and Leadership Integration.  In 2012, he received the Best Reviewer Award from Career Development International.

An active organizational consultant, his client engagements include work with Boeing, Raytheon, Bombardier Aerospace/Learjet, Gates Rubber Co. and Conagra, among others. He is certified by the Project Management Institute as a Project Management Professional. He also holds the CAPM designation.

Since joining Elon in 2000, Valle has received the LSB Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service, the LSB Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Student Government Association’s Dr. Gerald L. Francis Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year Award.

The Martha and Spencer Love Foundation made the original $1 million gift in 1985 to endow Elon’s business program. The Elon board of trustees voted to name the program the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business in memory of the foundation’s benefactors, textile magnate Spencer Love and his wife, Martha of Burlington, N.C. At the time, the gift was the largest in the 97-year history of the college.
