Death of retired faculty member Bill Long

The Rev. William G. "Bill" Long, 89, died at the Coble Health Care Center at Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, N.C. on June 14, 2018.

Bill Long served Elon in a variety of positions over 17 years. He retired in 1991 after serving as dean of student affairs; director of foundations, government and church relations; director of alumni/parent relations; and as a faculty member in political science. Prior to his work at Elon, Long was an administrator at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Kalamazoo College.

Long was married to the late Majorie Lantz Long. He is survived by their children, Kathleen, Chris, Michelle and David, along with six grand children and one great grandchild. He received his Master of Divinity Degree from Yale University and was an ordained minister. Long particularly enjoyed officiating at weddings for his students, family and friends. He was a member of the American Baptist Church, the United Church of Christ and, most recently, the Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir at the Church of the Holy Comforter.

A memorial service will be conducted at Holt Chapel, Holt Chapel Lane, Elon, N.C. on Wednesday, June 20 at 2 p.m. Friends and family will gather from 1:30 until 2 p.m., prior to the service, and a reception will be held at the church after the service. Rich and Thompson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
