The senior sport management major, who plays on Elon’s women’s lacrosse team, is working as a ticket and fan services intern for the NFL franchise.
The Lombardi Trophy caught her by surprise. When senior Erin Morsheimer’s tour of Lincoln Financial Field – home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles – made its way to the club level, she found herself staring into glint of football’s most coveted prize. So she took a photo with the trophy – a small perk of interning with a team fresh off a Super Bowl victory.
“We walked around a corner and it was just sitting there on a stand with an Eagles backdrop behind it,” said Morsheimer, a sport management major. “I wasn’t really sure what to think at first because it was such a surprise. I was definitely in awe just thinking about all the people that have seen and held the trophy and the experience of winning a Super Bowl.”
Morsheimer is a ticket and fan services intern with the Eagles this summer, where she helps season ticket holders manage their accounts, processes Stadium Builders License (SBL) paperwork, sets up for special events at the stadium (like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Jay-Z concerts), and assists during Eagles training camp.
The team offered her the internship in January after she completed a two-part interview.
“I was beyond happy,” Morsheimer said. “When I applied, I knew if I was accepted I would be living in a new city where I didn’t know any people, but I was excited.”
Her big summer project is to revise and develop new processes for SBL paperwork. Season ticket holders purchase a license in order to have rights to seats in the stadium. Her task is to streamline the SBL transfer process so that its efficient and easy for both the ticket office staff and the ticket holders.
“My internship so far has been incredible because of the work experience I have gained, the people I have met and worked with, and the unique opportunities we’ve had from the Super Bowl win,” she said. “I want to give the Eagles season ticket members and fans the best experience possible.”
So far so good, as her supervisors have been pleased with Morsheimer’s work and effort. She attributes her preparation for the internship to her sport management courses and experiences at Elon. In particular, she’s leaned on lessons learned from her Facility and Venue Management and Sport Law classes.
“I believe Elon prepared me well for the work I’ve been doing this summer,” she said. “I was able to quickly learn and apply because of the skills I have developed throughout all my coursework.
“I also think being a student athlete at Elon has prepared me for time management, leadership and work ethic that has been required of me throughout this internship.”
Morsheimer, a midfielder on Elon’s women’s lacrosse team, is no stranger to athletic competition, which helped drive her toward a sport management major and her Eagles internship. She began her junior year knowing she wanted to intern with a college or professional sports franchise. It’s an added bonus that an opportunity with a football team arose.
“My mom was always a big football fan and that definitely rubbed off on me growing up,” she said. “Football is my favorite sport to watch and the NFL is also my favorite professional sports league. Once I heard about (the Eagles internship) I knew that applying for it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
Morsheimer was raised in Maryland and grew up a Ravens fan. But after this summer, she counts herself as a member of Eagles fandom, as well. Before football and lacrosse, though, there was basketball. Morsheimer picked up the game at five and said it’s the first sport she fell in love with. It started an athletic career that’s led her to Elon.
“There is something special about team sports that had me hooked,” she said. “I think that is because of the great relationships that I developed and the valuable life lessons that I learned through my experiences with every team I have played for.”
That competitive edge that’s so embedded in her, combined with her Eagles internship, has made her realize she wants to pursue a career in professional sports after graduation.
“My ultimate goal is to develop relationships with all the amazing staff I have come across in my work with the Eagles and to narrow down a specific area in sport management that I want to pursue,” Morsheimer said. “I have been able to see a lot of what goes on behind the scenes of a professional sports organization. My interest in the industry is fueled by my love for sports. I want to be a part of an organization that allows me to bring together a community of people through sports and hopefully provide them some of the same incredible experiences that I have come across in sports.”
