The day-long symposium on Saturday, April 7, designed to bring together university faculty and staff, community mental health leaders, and students to consider the topic of mental health from multiple perspectives.
Elon University will host the Symposium on College Student Mental Health on Saturday, April 7, with the event designed to bring together university faculty and staff, community mental health leaders, and students to consider the topic of mental health from multiple perspectives.
The symposium, which runs from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., will include a presentation by keynote speaker Kelly Cukrowicz of Texas Tech University, as well as concurrent panel sessions on issues of identity and mental health, religion and mental health, the role of educational institutions in contributing to student mental health, and the community’s role in improving mental health.
Cukrowicz is a Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Texas Tech University and a licensed psychologist. She has been conducting research on depression and suicide for approximately 17 years. She has received grant funding for her research from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. She has published approximately 75 journal articles, primarily related to suicidal behavior. She has been honored with the Edwin Shneidman Award for Early Career Contributions to the study of suicide by the American Association of Suicidology.
The panels held during the symposium will feature 16 faculty, staff, student and community members and will be followed by a brief service activity. The symposium will address mental health broadly, but an interest in dialogue about suicidality is at the heart of the symposium.
The symposium is free to attend and is open to those within the Elon Community and the broader community. Lunch will be provided for registered participants.
