Accompanied by Communications Dean Rochelle Ford, a group of six students traveled to Chapel Hill on Oct. 20 to attend a forum presented by WTVD’s Minority Advisory Committee.
The charge of the WTVD Minority Advisory Committee is to provide advice to the ABC-owned affiliate on issues relating to minorities in the media. At an Oct. 20 event, titled “Women in Media: Tips, Opportunities, and Challenges,” the committee shared its insights with aspiring journalists, including six Elon students, and hosted a day of candid conversation about succeeding in today’s media industry.
Powell later joined fellow WTVD staff members Brittany Bell, Gloria Rodriguez and Amber Rupinta for a panel discussion touching on potential pitfalls for young journalists and hot-button issues in the industry. Additionally, students had an opportunity to chat and network with other media professionals in attendance, discussing sales, marketing, community relations and journalism.
“What I really enjoyed about the conference was getting to meet so many powerful women who are already in the industry and getting to hear about all their different journeys to the positions that they have now,” said Morris, a journalism major. “As a woman who is going into that industry, it was great to hear their perspective and the different things that they have to balance in their lives. It makes me proud to know that one day I will be alongside women like them in the industry working hard and being the best mmjanes we can be.”
