Elon University undergraduates from all majors are invited to apply to serve as Academic Tutors during a two-week, immersive, summer residential program. The ideal Academic Tutor will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, come from a Pell-eligible household, an ethnically marginalized group, or be a first-generation college student. All students who meet the consideration criteria are invited to apply for the limited and highly competitive spots. Academically gifted students who are not members of an Elon cohort experience would also find fulfillment and purpose from this meaningful work.

Duties

  • Work daily with high school students during the two-week summer residential program
  • Help the Freedom Scholars grapple with assigned readings assignments, and conduct research
  • Attend summer courses with the Freedom Scholars and work with their small cohorts during study hall.
  • Participate in required training and orientation

In their applications, potential tutors should demonstrate an understanding of some of the unique challenges they navigage in their own college journeys.

  • Submit a “Letter of Interest”
  • Provide the names of two professional Elon references, both of whom should have taught the applicant.

Finalists will also be required to complete an in-person interview with the Freedom Scholars program director. Approximately 3 Academic Tutors will be hired to work with the Freedom Scholars. While the program will not offer housing for Academic Tutors, we will provide free, on-campus. dining hall meals from Monday-Friday during the summer residential program. and earn four semester hours of credit. Acadenuc Tutors will be required to provide evidence of successfully completing Elon training for work with vulnerable populations. In addition, tutors must also attend a required orientation session during the preceding Spring.
