It Takes a Village Programs

The Village Project began in 2008 through a partnership between Elon University, and a matching grant from the Oak Foundation. Sixteen third-grade students participated the first year. Today there is a waiting list of students hoping to join the more than 300 Village participants who participate in weekly tutoring sessions held at Title I schools in the Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS).

Specialty programs within the Village Project include:

  • The Village Reading Project: One-on-one instruction for struggling kindergarten through 5th grade readers and parental support in a non-threatening setting. **Fall 2024 Reading Project – Registration is now open for our Fall 2024 Program. Click here for more information and to register.**
  • Start Early In Medicine: An initiative to combat the decline of Black Americans pursuing careers in medicine, the program exposes middle and high school students to health care careers. To learn more about Start Early In Medicine, click here.
  • Music In The Village: Kindergarten trough 5th grade students learn the basics of music while using their voice as an instrument. Students also learn instruments, such as piano, guitar and percussion, in addition to receiving an introduction to music technology. To learn more about Music In The Village, click here.
  • The Little Village: Aimed at pre-kindergarten children, the Little Village fosters children’s language development and emergent academic skills. **Fall 2024 Little Village Project – Registration is now open for our Fall 2024 Program. Click here for more information and to register.**
  • Summer In The Village: Provides summer learning opportunities that encourage academics and creative experiences for pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students. To learn more about Summer In The Village, click here to read an article featured in Today At Elon.
  • Village Outreach: Adult education ESL/Spanish language classes for parents of our students. It is provided in collaboration with Alamance Community College and our own small group instruction.
