Spring 2025 Volunteer Information
The Village Project provides free tutoring services during the fall and spring semesters for Pre-K through 5th-grade students enrolled in Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) elementary schools.
Our volunteers are dedicated students who support young learners through one-on-one or small-group tutoring in reading and math. ABSS teachers provide structured lesson plans and supervision to ensure an effective and supportive learning environment.
From February 10th through May 8th, The Village Project will operate one evening per week from 5:00–7:00 PM at each of our partner elementary schools within the ABSS. The program runs for 11 weeks, with specific session days varying by location (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday nights).
Volunteers will be matched with a school based on their availability and the school’s specific needs.
Before registering, please be sure to read our Volunteer Guide and be aware of the following information:
- By registering to volunteer with the “It Takes a Village” Project, you are committing to volunteer one night a week for the entire duration of the program in the spring semester, beginning the week of February 10th and ending the week of May 9th. If you are sick, on vacation, or otherwise unable to attend for a week, you are expected to let your teacher liaison and the Village Project’s Assistant Director know ahead of time.
- The Village Project is able to provide transportation to our volunteers, if requested. If you are unable to provide your own transportation, please indicate in the registration form, and we will be able to provide a bus/shuttle for you. If you indicate that you do not need transportation, please ensure that you are able to provide your own reliable transportation, as we will not be providing you with transportation this semester.
Since you will be working with vulnerable populations, we have a few requirements for our volunteers to complete before you can officially begin tutoring. Please ensure you have completed all the following to ensure you will be able to begin volunteering the first week:
- REGISTRATION FORM: Fill out the appropriate registration above to ensure you have enough time to complete the additional pre-volunteering requirements.
- PROTECTION OF MINORS TRAINING: Follow the link to self-enroll and complete this Moodle course, which includes a 6-minute long video and brief certification quiz. Email your Certificate of Completion to villageproject@elon.edu.
- BACKGROUND CHECK: Look for an email from Sterling Background Checks with further instructions.
- MANDATORY PRE-VOLUNTEERING ZOOM MEETING: All registered volunteers will receive an email with the link before the meeting.
More details on each of these requirements can be found in the Village Project Volunteer Guide.
Sydney Gilbert, Program Coordinator, is in charge of volunteer recruitment & management. Please direct all volunteer-related questions to her by emailing sgilbert15@elon.edu.
