Welcome to English at Elon

The English Department at Elon University offers students an array of opportunities. Two Bachelor of Arts majors are housed in the department: English and Professional Writing and Rhetoric (PWR).

Students in the English Major specialize in one of four concentrations (Creative Writing, Literature, English Teacher Licensure, Self Designed Program) or pursue a double concentration. Students may also do a double major in both English and PWR.

Outside the classroom, our students complete internships in a variety of fields or participate in on-campus activities, such as

  • writing for our award-winning literary magazine Colonnades
  • tutoring in the Writing Center
  • engaging with visiting writers and scholars
  • joining our chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society
  • and more.

Writers and researchers, our faculty members remain active professionally, serve as mentors for our students and routinely lead study abroad and Study USA courses in places such as South Africa, Ireland, London, Italy, Alaska, and Hawaii.

Recent majors are pursuing careers in publishing, science writing and grant writing, digital media, public relations, teaching, law, nonprofit and higher education administration, and business. Our alumni pursue graduate study in a variety of fields, including literature, creative writing, rhetoric, teaching, and law.
