Purpose of the Contest

  • To stimulate interest in mathematics.
  • To provide recognition of outstanding mathematics students and outstanding mathematics teachers.
  • To provide a friendly atmosphere to learn other ideas and methods of teaching and learning mathematics.
  • To have a fun and rewarding experience.

Awards

  • Certificates will be presented to the top scorer on each team.
  • Certificates of special merit will be presented to all contestants qualifying for the NCCTM state contest (top 8% of all participants with a minimum of ten persons). This has changed since last year.
  • Plaques will be presented to the three (3) top-scoring individuals.
  • Plaques and certificates will be presented to the three (3) top-scoring teams. A team is a group of at least four but no more than six students from the same accredited North Carolina school. There may not be more than six competitors for any one school.

You do NOT need to be part of a team to compete, but you must represent an officially sanctioned NC school.

We hope that the certificates of merit can be officially presented to each student on an awards day at their school.

The Test

The test will be a Comprehensive Test, so please see the state rules for eligibility. It will cover high school mathematics topics, mathematical aptitude, and general reasoning skills. No question that can be solved only by calculus will be included in the test. The contest will consist of 25 multiple-choice questions and five integer answer questions with a time limit of 70 minutes.

A Score for each contestant is computed by:

  • Multiple Choice
    • 4 points for a correct answer
    • 1 point for no answer
    • 0 points for an incorrect answer
  • Integer answer
    • 5 points for correct
    • 0 points for a wrong answer

A team score is computed by adding the highest four individual scores from each school. However, a team score will not be calculated if a school sends in fewer than four contestants.

A sequence of tie-breaker questions will be established to eliminate any possible ties.

Calculators

Contestants will not be permitted to use any calculator.

Fees

A fee of $10 will be charged for each Sponsor and each contestant attending the contest. The fee will cover the costs of the noon meal, printing expenses, and awards for the winners. It is recommended that contest supervisors seek payment of these fees from general school funds. Note: if the contestant is not of legal age, an adult must accompany the contestant.

Registration Forms

A sponsor form for each school must be completed for any student from that school to compete in the contest. The Sponsor who fills out the form does not have to be the one the accompanies the students to the competition. Please make sure only one sponsor form is completed per school year. A sponsor must have the authority to represent the school. It is also the Sponsor’s responsibility to ensure each student from their respective school is not left on the Elon campus with no adult supervision.

Each student must complete the form below before coming to the contest. (Note: Before a student may register for the contest, a sponsor must fill out the form above.) students that do not register in advance may be denied entrance to the exam room. This is at the discretion of the contest director.

Schedule of Events

9:30 a.m. – Registration begins (Larose Student Commons)

10:10 a.m. – Opening Assembly

10:30 a.m. – Test Administration/Sponsor reception/program

Noon – Lunch

1:00 p.m. – Math Sprints Competition

1:50 p.m. – If needed, Tiebreaker match followed by the Awards Assembly

Parking

Since it is Saturday, you may park anywhere on campus you wish. Suggestion – Park perpendicular to the railroad tracks.

Common Questions

May a student come to the contest without having a sponsor?

No. A student that shows up to the contest without a proper sponsor will not be allowed to take the exam.

May a student participate in the Elon Contest as an individual and not on a team?

Yes. ALL students participate as individuals. A team is defined as four students that attend the same school (See next question for eligibility). For example, if Elon Elementary has three students participating, then Elon Elementary is not eligible for a team award, BUT each student from Elon Elementary is eligible for individual awards.

What is the maximum number of students from the same school that can participate in the contest at Elon?

The answer is a perfect number … 6. (New for 2016 … An additional six students may participate but are not eligible for the school team, awards, or an invitation to the State Finals.)

Can the Sponsor be a parent?

Yes. However, the school must permit the parent to be the Sponsor.
