About the Program

In the spring of 2013 the Coordinator of Music Education founded a new and exciting program called Music in the Village. This program evolved out of the “Village Project”, a program created in the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education designed to strengthen literacy skills for elementary and middle school children. Music in the Village is a service-learning community outreach program designed for elementary to middle school aged children and their parents that teaches musical literacy and supports the literacy mandate of the “Village Project”. Music education students can participate and teach in this program in each semester of residency except the semester of student teaching. This Village experience provides the opportunity for prospective teachers to not only develop teaching skills and strategies, but it gives them invaluable insight into how to foster meaningful relationships with parents.  Parents are a crucial component of Music in the Village as they attend classes with their children. Elon students who have a music background are also encouraged to become instructors in Music in the Village.

Mission

To offer small group and private music instruction to Alamance Burlington School System (ABSS) students, fostering creativity, expression, and confidence. We aim to collaborate with ABSS, providing additional avenues for students to engage in music-making experiences. Our commitment is to deliver cost-free education, ensuring every student develops fundamental knowledge and skills through the power of making music.

Vision

To be a community leader strongly advocating for every child’s access to knowledge and skills that enable them to make music and the arts a viable lifelong pursuit – whether as a leisurely activity or a professional endeavor. We are also dedicated to empowering students in our program to explore the rich diversity of individuals who contribute to the world through the many different kinds of music they create.
