Dr. Jane Romer

Dr. Jane Romer, a North Carolina native, has always been attracted to the study of world languages and cultures. She studied French and Latin in high school and as an undergraduate, double-majored in French and English. She taught French in a public school in Florida for three years before deciding to work on her graduate degrees at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she earned a PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures, focusing on French, Italian, and Spanish.  While pursuing her doctorate, she did research in Paris at the Bibliothèque Nationale, thanks to the Lurcy Fellowship for doctoral research.  During her twenty-four years at Elon, she led students to Guadeloupe, Nice, Greece, and London. During her teaching career, Dr. Romer traveled to many professional conferences, some of which took her to Paris and Lyon in France, Liège, Belgium, and Canada. Recognizing the value of professional organizations, Dr. Romer has been very active in the American Association of Teachers of French, serving as national vice president from 2011 to 2014. Previous to that, she served as secretary, vice president and president of the North Carolina chapter of AATF.  She remains active in this organization, serving on the Endowment Fund committee. She would heartily recommend that undergraduate students participate in professional conferences as part of their academic preparation. She is pleased that this grant from the Department of World Languages and Cultures will assist Elon students with the practical costs of professional development in their chosen language and culture.
