Building technical skills and learning will keep you engaged and moving forward in your job or internship search. Employers like to see the specific skills that relate to their industry. Having these skills demonstrates your interest and commitment to the industry, your ability to learn new things, and could give you an edge over another job applicant.
Before you invest time, and potentially money, do some research. Network with people in your industry of interest to find out what skills/certifications are most valued. What is used on a daily basis? You also can check current job postings to see what technical skills appear most often in the requirements section. Don’t forget to speak with your professors about their experience and recommendations.
It should be no surprise that Microsoft Excel is still one of the top skills sought by employers. For business students, you can obtain this certification through BUS 2110 Management of Information Systems and MBA/MSBA 5010.
