¡Celebremos!: Graduates Take Flight

To my parents,
Thank you for every opportunity you have ever made for me and the wonderful example you set. Because of you, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. We’ve been through a lot just the three of us, and even though the college process hasn’t been an easy one, we did it! graduating is not just my accomplishment its ours and I can’t wait to keep making you proud.

I want to thank the Grant Family, Ms. Annette Vanstory, Marcus Elliott, Catherine Parsons, and the Odyssey Program for making Elon an accessible opportunity. I also want to thank all of the friends, classmates, professors, and staff who have had an impact on my Elon career.

To this day, I can’t believe 4 years have gone by this quickly. With time and patience, I became very fond of Elon. However, the fact that my experience was a good one is due to the people. Without the friends and people I met through El Centro, I would not have these beautiful memories of Elon. El Centro gave me the community I so needed when I left Puerto Rico at 17 years old. I also want to thank my family. Without the support of my family, I wouldn’t be here either. My family taught me the value of education and hard work. They taught me to recognize my successes and celebrate each achievement. I will always remember that support during my time at Elon, but most of all, in these last difficult months as I tried to create a plan for this coming year. Now, I feel so excited to return to Puerto Rico and spend some quality family time with you. Thank you!

My mom immigrated from Nicaragua when she was 11 years old, and since then she has worked hard for herself and our family. Because of the work both of my parents put in, I have the honor and privilege of graduating from this amazing school that has done so much for me and my future. Growing up we took family trips to Nicaragua almost annually, reminding me of my roots and teaching me many great life lessons. I learned to appreciate the simple things in life and to be grateful for all that I have. I learned how to be compassionate towards others and build connections with people from all sorts of backgrounds. Reflecting on the time I spent on my family’s farm, I realize it was among the most impactful experiences that significantly broadened my perspective. Experiencing and embracing my Nicaraguan culture is such an honor and something that I love to talk about with anyone who will listen.

Dear family, friends, and all who have been part of this incredible journey,
Today, in this moment of celebration and achievement, it’s hard to adequately express the gratitude I feel in my heart.

Reflecting on the past four years, I am flooded with gratitude for the countless blessings I’ve received. Every opportunity I’ve had along this journey has been shaped by the people I’ve encountered. Some crossed my path only briefly, while others stayed for a significant time. Nevertheless, each has left their mark on my life. Every encounter, every interaction, has contributed to the person I am today.

Therefore, I would like to express my gratitude to my family – mom, Hermes, Cuca, Krystal, Stephany, Lunna, Gnaldinho, and Larissa- for always being there in every moment, both good and tough, and for their unwavering support. Your love and support have been the driving force behind all of my achievements. I want to dedicate a special thank you to my late grandmother Socorro, for being a constant source of inspiration and guidance.

To the Odyssey Program, my eternal gratitude, for providing the resources that brought me here and for opening the doors to my academic journey.

And to El Centro, thank you for being a space where I could feel connected to my culture, find support and community, and grow as an individual.

To my friends, you have been more than journey companions; you have been my source of joy, strength, and inspiration. Your laughter, advice, and friendly shoulders have made this academic journey so much more meaningful and memorable.

There is a famous saying we use a lot in El Centro: “It takes a village to raise a child”. That’s what I was when I left my home at 17: still a child. Leaving home at 17 and travelling to a different country wasn’t easy. Even though it was a marvelous adventure, like everything in life, it had its sunny days and rough seas. The thing is, even the hardest moments can be overcome with a strong and supportive village, and I was very lucky to have that.

Not only that, but my village kept growing. At first, I had my parents, who have been there for me from the very start, who have believed in me even when I didn’t, who are always there for me with open arms and loving words, to whom I owe everything. Then, as I became more comfortable at Elon, my village began to grow. I found stalwart friends who make me laugh until my stomach hurts, who rejoice at my growth, who took the time to know me as I am, who became another home away from home. Finally, my village couldn’t be complete without my mentors. When I began my 4 years at Elon, I was ecstatic to learn and grow, but I was still unsure of myself and my abilities. It was my mentors who welcomed me and put their faith in me, gave me the challenges I needed to see what I was capable of, who taught me and coached me in both life and academics, who have become integral to who I am as a person and how I show up in the world.

To my entire village, I thank you from the very bottom of my being. You have all helped build who I am today, and your teachings and love will continue to impact me for the rest of my life. I love you all from the bottom of my heart.

Today, on this special day, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each of you. Without your love, support and sacrifice, getting here would not have been possible.

To my parents, thank you for being my guide, my inspiration, and my greatest support. Their unconditional love and sacrifices have been the force that has driven me to achieve my goals. Without you, none of this would be possible.

To my brothers, Sam and Gabo, thank you for being my joy and a great support every step of the way. Your love and friendship are treasures that I will always cherish. And I am very proud of you.

To my grandparents, Elsa and Rafael, Thank you for always welcoming me with open hugs and for all the good advice in life. I am proud to be your granddaughter and admire everything you have done to bring all of us forward.

To my twin uncles, Miguel and Dani, thank you for being like my older brothers, for taking care of me and helping me at every stage of my life.

To my aunt Paty for always giving me so much love and happiness and for being so kind to my family.

To my aunts, Adriana and Fanny, I miss you very much and I appreciate everything you have done for me and our family. I appreciate all the beautiful moments we have shared and all the advice you gave me. To my paternal grandparents, Fanny and Martin, thank you for always watching over us from heaven; I miss you.

To my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family in Colombia, all of you are and always will be very special to me. No matter the distance we will always be family and we will always take care of each other. Thank you very much to each of you for your attention, love, and support; especially in the last 4 months I spent in Colombia. Thank you for showing me the beauty of Colombia, telling me more about where I come from, and for the many laughs we shared.

To my friends, you have been my rock, my motivation, and my source of joy. Thank you for sharing these 4 years with me and for being part of my best memories. Alanis, Fernanda, Samantha, Isabella, and Sophia, thank you for so much patience and love. I appreciate our friendship so much!

Dear Friends, Family, and loved ones,

Today, as we gather in celebration and reflection, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and filled with emotion as I address the community that has nurtured me, guided me, and supported me throughout my journey.

I stand before you as a proud first-generation college student, a testament to the values we hold dear in our community — perseverance, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of education. As I ventured into the world of academia, I carried with me not only my dreams but the aspirations of every individual in this village.

“Tienes que echarle muchas ganas en la vida mi niña, tienes que hacer lo que tus padres no pudieron, porque con una educación vas a ir lejos en la vida.” This phrase, imbued with hope and wisdom, was whispered to me in moments of doubt and it fueled my drive to forge ahead. It reminded me that my education is not just for me, but a bridge to opportunities that our parents and grandparents envisioned but could not reach.

I am deeply thankful to each one of you — my family, friends, and loved ones, for the endless love, encouragement, and sacrifices that have paved the path I walk today. Your belief in me has been my stronghold, your stories and lessons, the light that guided me through challenges.

As we celebrate this milestone, let us remember that our collective efforts and shared dreams are the cornerstone of every achievement. My journey is not mine alone but belongs to all of us in this beloved village. Together, we are setting a precedent for future generations, proving that with education, determination, and community support, the possibilities are boundless.

I wouldn’t be in the privileged position that I am in right now without my family. Your guidance and support means everything to me and it will continue to do so even after this incredible milestone. You are my role models and my ultimate inspiration. Thanks to my mom and dad I am taking leaps in life I never would have imagined as a kid. If I had a dollar for every “echale ganas” I heard these past four years I would probably have enough for the new car I want. But it was your words that kept me moving forward. Thank you all for always being such an inspiration.

I am very grateful to the Odyssey Program, especially Marcus, Catherine, and Martha, and to all the donors who made it possible for me to be here. Without them and the program, a big support system would be missing. I know that if I ever needed something, I could always count on them for support.

As I prepare to graduate, I can’t help but think how far I have come. Throughout my four years at Elon, I have seen personal and professional growth that I thought would have been impossible before coming here. The person I am today has been shaped and influenced by all the wonderful people that I have surrounded myself with throughout my years at Elon. I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude for all the support and encouragement I have received along the way. So now, I would like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to those who have supported me.

Your unwavering support, whether it was through words of encouragement, lending an ear during challenging times, or offering guidance and advice, has meant the world to me. They saw my talent and my potential and gave me the chance. To the person who believed in my ability to be curious back in 9th grade and sparked my passion for technology. To the Odyssey Program providing me with the financial needs to pursue my dream. To My research mentor for pushing my abilities and getting published in a prestigious Scientific journal. People say to be realistic, but I like to think of being a dreamer. If I didn’t dream, I would have never broken that glass ceiling, and been a trailblazer for other first-generation Latinos working in technology. Thank you to my sister who is in the audience right now – you are my role model and I want to say thank you for all of those years from tying my shoelaces before going to elementary school to now seeing your brother graduating college. Thank you Ma y Pa, both of you risked everything to provide me with this opportunity, and to see your last son bring home a degree must show that it was all worth it! To all the mentors, professors and friends thank you, you made a huge impact on my college career. One final thank you to the kid who was born in Arkansas and never gave up and kept dreaming and is now graduating with a degree in computer science at Elon University. You did it, you achieved something that made the family and the community proud but most importantly it made you proud.

To my village, my family. I want to say thank you. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for always being there for me and for never giving up. This road that I have traveled has been long and difficult. Through your support I was able to push through and be here today. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your help. You’ve taught me to be kinder to myself and to be proud of my accomplishments. Now I know I can do anything with you supporting me. I’ll always be grateful.

First of all I want to thank my parents who have been the greatest example for me, who live their life with so much love and affection. Thank you for always supporting my dreams since I was little. To my father, who dreamed of me just at the moment I decided to be the best tennis player in the world when I was only 8 years old, and to my mother, who is the strongest woman I know, thanks for teaching me to appreciate every moment that life gives me, and see how she works every day to bring the people she loves forward. To my brothers who have been my best friends since I can remember and will be my best friends until the end. Thanks to my grandparents for always spoiling me and hugging me when I need it most. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to live this beautiful experience at Elon, where I was able to love, grow, become independent and fight for myself. Finally I want to thank all the people I met here at Elon, who took on the task of knowing me, loving me and supporting me during this beautiful journey. Thanks to these special people I was able to feel not so far from home. Elon will always have a place in my heart.

Dear mi pueblo,

I stand here today as a product of the environment that I’ve been around. My family, you have shown me the principles and values needed to become who I need to become. Padre: You have taken me under your belt to be hard-working and disciplined. Madre: Your intelligence and purity have shown me how to be analytical and how to move with grace. Abuela: You have shown me what the true meaning of sacrifice is, and your wisdom continues to speak into my head. Hermana: Our relationship has been a learning process and it’s taught me everything I need to know about true mentorship and how to move as times are changing. To my community back home, it’s difficult but it’s doable. It’s never too late to change and obtain a purpose. As I go back to the Dream Center and the Village Project, I revisit that survivor’s guilt that I have felt with my fellow friends going down the wrong path. No one talks about how challenging it is to find different circles, constantly code switch, and seek the resources one needs, especially with having few people that care enough to guide you. Pero, sí se puede. Huge thank you to my friends, professors, advisors, and mentors for helping me on this journey.

Lastly, to my peers: Feel accomplished. Feel pride. You’ve made it, you’ve done it. Life has thrown so many stones at you throughout this time. However, you’ve converted them into this milestone.

So, let’s celebrate it!

My name is Ana Luisa Scholtes. I am sure when you hear my name, a few things may stick out to you: the length, the cultural ambiguity, the pronunciation versus the spelling. My name is something that I occasionally struggle with. I get very nervous introducing myself to people because nearly every time without fail I have to repeat, explain the pronunciation, explain the origin, etc. So, allow me a moment to explain. I am named after my grandfather, Luis Miguel Peña, who grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia and immigrated to America after finished Medical School in Spain, where he met my Grandmother Carmen Romea. He was an incredibly smart, funny, and kind man whom I am lucky to be sharing name with.
As I previously mentioned, I struggle with sharing my name, but I also struggle with embracing my heritage and feeling “Hispanic enough”. But after my grandfather passed away this past March, I have realized that I’ve been looking at identity very superficially. Being Latino goes beyond language abilities or passed down recipes, it’s a symbol of strength, loyalty, and pride. With that being said, I am here ending my journey at Elon, proud of who I have become. And I would not be here and proud without the village of people who have supported me these past four years. To my friends: you have taught me the true meaning of friendship and loyalty and I couldn’t have been luckier to have laughed and cried with such amazing people. To my Professors: thank you for listening to me, guiding me, challenging me, and supporting me on this path. And finally, my parents: thank you for the endless support and encouragement these past four years. During the ups and downs I have faced these past few years, you have always been there to encourage and support me. Thank you for seeing beyond my mistakes and flaws and pushing me to be the woman I am today. Thank you.

Mallorie would like to thank her family and friends for all the support and love throughout her time at Elon. Her mom, her dad, her brothers, Abuela and Pipo, Grandma and Grandpa, Sara, Jaid, Angelina, Leah, Parker: she loves you all very much and is so thankful for all of you.

I would have never been able to make it through the last four years of Elon without my mom by my side. She is my rock. Always there for me. She always picks up the phone no matter the time of day or night. She is always ready to accompany me via the phone on my way home from teaching waiting to hear all of my stories. Thank you so much mami for everything you do for me! Te quiero mucho!!! Tia Tata estoy tan emocionada por tenerte aquí finalmente después de tantos años!! Te quiero muchísimo!! You are both a incredibly important part of my village.

I never imagined to be where I’m standing today but I could have never made it here on my own so many people were constantly pushing me to be my very best. I’d like to thank my biology professors who helped me foster an undying passion for science. My research mentor for waking up with me every morning of the summer at 5 AM to listen to birds. To my friends who have been with me since the beginning through thick and thin. Finally, to my Mama and Dad who were the ones who gave me the opportunity to study at this school their hard work is reflected through me and I know I’ve made them proud. You have always been here to catch me when I fall and hold me when I need it. Thank you so much for making me the amazing young woman I am today about to move on to the next stage of my life.

Gracias por cada oportunidad que me has brindado y el maravilloso ejemplo que me diste. Gracias a ti, no sería la persona que soy hoy. Hemos pasado por muchas cosas solo nosotros tres y, aunque el proceso universitario no ha sido fácil, ¡lo logramos! Graduarme no es sólo un logro mío, es nuestro y no puedo esperar para seguir enorgulleciéndolos.

Quiero agradecer a la familia Grant, la Sra. Annette Vanstory, Marcus Elliott, Catherine Parsons y el Programa Odyssey por hacer de Elon una oportunidad accesible. También quiero agradecer a todos los amigos, compañeros de clase, profesores y personal que han tenido un impacto en mi carrera en Elon.

Hasta el día de hoy, no puedo creer que 4 años se hayan pasado así de rápido. Con tiempo y paciencia, le cogí mucho cariño a Elon. Sin embargo, el hecho de que mi experiencia fue una buena se debe a la gente. Sin las amistades y las personas que conocí a través del Centro, no tendría estas memorias tan bonitas de Elon. El Centro me dio la comunidad que tanto necesitaba cuando me fui de Puerto Rico a los 17 años. También le quiero dar las gracias a mi familia. Sin el apoyo de mi familia tampoco estaría aquí. Mi familia me enseñó el valor de la educación y el trabajo duro. Me enseñaron a reconocer mis éxitos y celebrar cada logro. Siempre recordaré ese apoyo durante mi tiempo en Elon, pero más que nada, en estos últimos meses difíciles mientras intentaba crear un plan para este próximo año. Ahora, me siento tan emocionada de regresar a Puerto Rico y pasar un tiempo rico en familia con ustedes. Gracias!

Mi mamá emigró de Nicaragua cuando tenía 11 años y desde entonces ha trabajado duro para nuestra familia. Gracias al trabajo que realizaron mis padres, tengo el honor y el privilegio de graduarme de esta increíble escuela que ha hecho tanto por mí y por mi futuro. Mientras crecía, hacíamos viajes familiares a Nicaragua casi todos los años, lo que me recordó mis raíces y me enseñó muchas lecciones de vida maravillosas. Aprendí a apreciar las cosas simples de la vida y a estar agradecido por todo lo que tengo. Aprendí a ser compasivo con los demás y a establecer conexiones con personas de todo tipo de orígenes. Al reflexionar sobre el tiempo que pasé en la granja de mi familia, me di cuenta de que fue una de las experiencias más impactantes que amplió significativamente mi perspectiva. Experimentar y abrazar mi cultura nicaragüense es un gran honor y algo de lo que me encanta hablar con cualquiera que quiera escucharme.

Queridos familiares, amigos, e todos os que fizeram parte desta incrível jornada,
Hoje, neste momento de celebração e realização, é difícil expressar adequadamente a gratidão que sinto em meu coração.

Refletindo sobre os últimos quatro anos, sou inundada de gratidão pelas inúmeras bênçãos que recebi. Cada oportunidade que tive ao longo dessa jornada foi moldada pelas pessoas que encontrei. Algumas cruzaram meu caminho apenas brevemente, enquanto outras permaneceram por um tempo significativo. No entanto, todas deixaram suas marcas em minha vida. Cada encontro, cada interação, contribuiu para a pessoa que sou hoje.  Por tanto, gostaria de expressar minha gratidão à minha família – mãe, Hermes, Cuca, Krystal, Stephany, Lunna, Gnaldinho, e Larissa- porestarem sempre presente em todos os momentos, tanto bons quanto difíceis, e por seu apoio inabalável. Seu amor e apoio foram a força motriz por trás de todas as minhas conquistas. Quero dedicar um agradecimento especial à minha saudosa vó Socorro, por ter sido uma constante fonte de inspiração e orientação.

Ao Odyssey Program, minha eterna gratidão, por fornecer os recursos que me trouxeram até aqui e por abrir as portas para minha jornada acadêmica.

Hay un dicho famoso que usamos mucho en El Centro: “Se necesita un pueblo para criar a un niño”. Esa era yo cuando salí de mi casa a los 17 años: todavía una niña. Salir de casa a los 17 años y viajar a otro país no fue fácil. Aunque fue una aventura maravillosa, como todo en la vida, tuvo sus días soleados y sus mares agitados. La cuestión es que incluso los momentos más difíciles se pueden superar con un pueblo fuerte y solidario, y tuve mucha suerte de tenerlo.

No sólo eso, sino que mi pueblo siguió creciendo. Al principio tuve a mis padres, que estuvieron ahí para mí desde el principio, que creyeron en mí incluso cuando yo no lo hice, que siempre están ahí con los brazos abiertos y palabras cariñosas, a quienes se lo debo todo. Luego, a medida que me sentí más cómoda en Elon, mi aldea empezó a crecer. Encontré amigos incondicionales que me hacen reír hasta que me duele el estómago, que se alegran de mi crecimiento, que se tomaron el tiempo de conocerme tal como soy, que se convirtieron en otro hogar lejos de casa. Finalmente, mi pueblo no podría estar completo sin mis mentores.

Cuando comencé mis 4 años en Elon, estaba eufórica por aprender y crecer, pero todavía no estaba segura de mí misma ni de mis habilidades. Fueron mis mentores quienes me dieron la bienvenida y pusieron su fe en mí, me dieron los desafíos que necesitaba para ver de lo que era capaz, quienes me enseñaron y orientaron tanto en la vida como en lo académico, quienes se han convertido en una parte integral de lo que soy como persona y cómo me presento en el mundo.

A todo mi pueblo, les agradezco desde lo más profundo de mi ser. Todos ustedes han ayudado a construir lo que soy hoy, y sus enseñanzas y su amor seguirán impactándome por el resto de mi vida. Los amo a todos desde el fondo de mi corazón.

Hoy, en este día tan especial, quiero expresar mi más profundo agradecimiento a cada uno de ustedes. Sin su amor, apoyo y sacrificio, llegar hasta aquí no habría sido posible.

A mis padres, gracias por ser mi guía, mi inspiración y mi mayor apoyo. Su amor incondicional y sus sacrificios han sido la fuerza que me ha impulsado a alcanzar mis metas. Sin ustedes, nada de esto sería posible.

Hoy mientras nos reunimos para celebrar y reflexionar, me siento abrumada por gratitud y llena de emoción al dirigirme a la comunidad que me ha nutrido, guiado, y apoyado a lo largo de mi viaje.

Estoy ante ustedes como una orgullosa estudiante universitaria de primera generación, un testimonio de los valores que apreciamos en nuestra comunidad: perseverancia, resiliencia, y la búsqueda incesante de la educación. Cuando aventure al mundo académico, traje conmigo no solo mis sueños sino las también las aspiraciones de cada individuo de este pueblo.

“Tienes que echarle muchas ganas en la vida mi niña, tienes que hacer lo que tus padres no pudieron, porque con una educación vas a ir lejos en la vida.” Esta frase, imbuida de esperanza y sabiduría, me la susurraron en momentos de duda y alimentó mi impulso para seguir adelante. Me recordaba que mi educación no es sólo para mí, sino un puente hacia oportunidades que nuestros padres y abuelos imaginaron pero que no pudieron alcanzar.

Estoy profundamente agradecida a cada uno de ustedes: mi familia, amigos, y seres queridos, por el amor, el apoyo, y los sacrificios infinitos que han allanado el camino que recorro hoy. Su creencia en mí ha sido mi fortaleza, tus historias y lecciones la luz que me ha guiado a través de los desafíos.

Al celebrar este hito, recordemos que nuestros esfuerzos colectivos y sueños compartidos son la piedra angular de cada logro. Mi viaje no es solo mío, sino que le pertenece a todos los que vivimos en este querido pueblo. Juntos, estamos sentando un precedente para las generaciones futuras, demostrando que con educación, determinación, y apoyo comunitario, las posibilidades son ilimitadas.

No estaría en la posición privilegiada en la que me encuentro ahora sin mi familia. Su orientación y apoyo significan todo para mí y seguirán siéndolo incluso después de este increíble hito. Ustedes son mis modelos a seguir y mi máxima inspiración. Gracias a mi mamá y mi papá estoy dando saltos en la vida que nunca hubiera imaginado cuando era niño. Si tuviera un dólar por cada “echale ganas” que escuché estos últimos cuatro años, probablemente tendría suficiente para el auto nuevo que quiero. Pero fueron sus palabras las que me hicieron seguir adelante. Gracias a todos por ser siempre una gran inspiración.

Estoy muy agradecido con el Programa Odyssey, especialmente con Marcus, Catherine y Martha, y con todos los donantes que hicieron posible que yo estuviera aquí. Sin ellos y el programa, me faltaría un gran sistema de apoyo. Sé que si alguna vez necesitara algo, siempre podría contar con su apoyo.

A todos mis amigos, les agradezco por su apoyo y por ser una gran inspiración. Gracias por todos los recuerdos y buenos momentos de estos últimos cuatro años.

Quiero agradecerle a todas las personas aquí en Elon y que me han apoyado a lo largo de los años. Un agradecimiento especial a Elon’s Finest por traer personas tan maravillosas a mi vida, que realmente se han convertido en una familia para mí.

Mientras me preparo para graduarme, no puedo parar de pensar en lo lejos que he llegado. A lo largo de mis cuatro años en Elon, he visto un crecimiento personal y profesional que no pensaba ser posible antes de llegar aquí. La persona que soy hoy ha sido moldeada e influenciada por todas las personas maravillosas de las que me he rodeado a lo largo de mis años en Elon. Me siento increíblemente agradecido por todo el apoyo y el ánimo que he recibido a lo largo del camino. Así que ahora me gustaría tomar un momento para expresar mi agradecimiento a quienes me han apoyado.

Mis padres, mis hermanas, mi novia, mis amigos, Odyssey, First-Gen, profesores y mentores. Su apoyo firme, ya sea a través de palabras que me animan, escuchándome durante momentos difíciles u ofreciendo orientación y consejo, ha significado el mundo para mí. Su fe en mis habilidades ha sido una fuente constante de motivación, impulsándome a alcanzar la excelencia en todo lo que hago. Sus contribuciones no han pasado desapercibidas y realmente aprecio todo lo que han hecho para ayudarme a ser exitoso.

Al embarcarme en este nuevo viaje, llevo conmigo las lecciones que me han enseñado y los valores que me han inculcado. Su influencia ha formado no sólo mis actividades académicas sino también a mi persona. Quiero que sepan que su apoyo ha tenido un impacto significativo en mi vida y estaré eternamente agradecido de tenerlos a mi lado. A medida que paso a la siguiente fase de mi vida, espero hacerles sentir orgullosos y seguir honrando la fe que tienen en mi potencial.

Vieron mi talento y mi potencial y me dieron una oportunidad. A la persona que creyó en mi capacidad para ser curioso en el noveno grado y despertó mi pasión por la tecnología. Al Programa Odyssey que me brindó las necesidades financieras para perseguir mi sueño. A mi mentor de investigación por impulsar mis habilidades y poder publicar en una prestigiosa revista científica. La gente dice que debería ser realista, pero a mí me gusta pensar que soy un soñador. Si no hubiera soñado, nunca habría roto ese techo de cristal y no habría sido un pionero para otros latinos de primera generación que trabajan también en el campo de tecnología. Gracias a mi hermana que está entre la audiencia en este momento; tu eres mi modelo a seguir y quiero agradecerte por todos estos años juntos, desde que me ataste los cordones de los zapatos antes de ir a la escuela primaria hasta este momento, viendo a tu hermano graduarse de la universidad. Gracias Ma y Pa, ambos arriesgaron todo para brindarme esta oportunidad, y ver a su último hijo traer a casa un título es prueba que todo valió la pena. A todos mis mentores, profesores y amigos, gracias. Tuvieron un gran impacto en mi carrera universitaria. Quiero darle un último agradecimiento al niño que nació en Arkansas que nunca se rindió y siguió soñando y ahora se gradúa en ciencias de la computación en la Universidad de Elon. Lo hiciste, lograste algo que enorgulleció a tu familia y a tu comunidad, pero lo más importante es que te enorgulleció a ti.

A mi pueblo, mi familia. Quiero dar las gracias. Gracias por creer en mi. Gracias por estar siempre ahí para mí y por nunca rendirse. Este camino que he recorrido ha sido largo y difícil. Gracias a su apoyo, pude salir adelante y estar aquí hoy. Gracias por su paciencia. Gracias por su ayuda. Me han enseñado a ser más amable conmigo misma y a estar orgullosa de mis logros. Ahora sé que puedo hacer cualquier cosa si ustedes me apoyan. Siempre estaré agradecida.

Primero que nada quiero dar las gracias a mis padres que han sido el ejemplo más grande para mí, que viven la vida con tanto amor y cariño. Gracias a ellos que siempre apoyaron mis sueños desde chiquita. Mi padre que soñó conmigo justo en el momento en el que decidí ser la mejor jugadora de tennis del mundo cuando tenía solo 8 años, y a mi madre que es la mujer más fuerte que conozco, por enseñarme a apreciar cada momentito que me da la vida, y ver como trabaja día a día para sacar a las personas que ama adelante. A mis hermanos que son mis mejores amigos desde que tengo memoria y serán mis mejores amigos hasta el final. Gracias a mis abuelitos por siempre consentirme y abrazarme cuando más lo necesito. Gracias por darme la oportunidad de vivir esta hermosa experiencia en Elon, donde pude amar, crecer, independizarme y luchar por mi misma. Finalmente quiero agradecer a toda la gente que conocí aquí en Elon, que se dieron la tarea de conocerme, quererme y apoyarme durante este hermoso viaje, gracias a estas personas tan especiales me pude sentir no tan lejos de casa. Elon siempre va a llevar un lugar en mi corazón.

Querido pueblo,

Estoy aquí hoy como producto del ambiente en el que he estado. Familia mía, me han mostrado los principios y valores necesarios para convertirme en quien debo ser. Padre: Me has enseñado a ser trabajador y disciplinado. Madre: Tu inteligencia y pureza me han demostrado cómo ser analítico y cómo moverme con gracia. Abuela: Me has mostrado cuál es el verdadero significado del sacrificio y tu sabiduría sigue presente en mi mente. Hermana: Nuestra relación ha sido un proceso de aprendizaje y me ha enseñado todo lo que necesito saber sobre la verdadera mentoría y cómo seguir adelante mientras los tiempos cambian. Para mi comunidad, es difícil, pero se puede. Nunca es muy tarde para cambiar y buscar un propósito. Al regresar al Dream Center y al Village Project, me siento culpable por lo que he logrado mientras mis compañeros tomaron el camino equivocado. Nadie habla de lo difícil que es encontrar diferentes círculos de amistades, cambiar la manera en que uno habla según el espacio en el que esta y buscar los recursos que uno necesita. Es bien difícil cuando tienes pocas personas que se preocupen lo suficiente como para guiarte. Pero si se puede. Muchas gracias a mis amigos, profesores, consejeros y mentores por ayudarme durante mi tiempo en Elon.

Por último, a mis compañeros: siéntanse realizados. Sientan orgullo. Lo han logrado, han terminado. La vida les ha arrojado tantas piedras a lo largo de este tiempo. Sin embargo, los han convertido en éxitos.

Mi nombre es Ana Luisa Scholtes. Estoy segura de que cuando escuchas mi nombre, algunas cosas te llamarán la atención: la extensión, la ambigüedad cultural, la pronunciación versus la ortografía. Mi nombre es algo con lo que lucho de vez en cuando. Me pongo muy nervioso al presentarme a personas nuevas porque casi todas las veces sin falta tengo que repetirlo, explicar la pronunciación, explicar el origen, etc. Entonces, permítanme un momento para explicarles. Llevo el nombre de mi abuelo, Luis Miguel Peña, quien creció en Barranquilla, Colombia y emigró a Estados Unidos después de terminar la Facultad de Medicina en España, donde conoció a mi abuela Carmen Romea. El era un hombre increíblemente inteligente, divertido y amable con quien tengo la suerte de compartir nombre.

Como mencioné anteriormente, me cuesta compartir mi nombre, pero también me cuesta aceptar mi herencia y sentirme “lo suficientemente hispana”. Pero después de que mi abuelo falleciera el pasado marzo, me di cuenta de que había estado mirando la identidad de una manera muy superficial. Ser latino va más allá de las habilidades lingüísticas o de las recetas heredadas, es un símbolo de fortaleza, lealtad y orgullo. Dicho esto, estoy aquí terminando mi viaje en Elon, orgullosa de en quién me he convertido. Y no estaría aquí y orgullosa sin el pueblo de personas que me han apoyado estos últimos cuatro años. A mis amigos: me han enseñado el verdadero significado de la amistad y la lealtad. No podría haber tenido más suerte de haber reído y llorado con personas tan maravillosas. A mis profesores: gracias por escucharme, guiarme, desafiarme y apoyarme en este camino. Y finalmente, mis padres: gracias por el apoyo y el aliento infinito durante estos últimos cuatro años. Durante los altibajos que he enfrentado estos últimos años, siempre han estado ahí para animarme y apoyarme. Gracias por ver más allá de mis errores y defectos y empujarme a ser la mujer que soy hoy. Gracias.

Mallorie quisiera agradecer a su familia y amigos por todo el apoyo y amor durante su tiempo en Elon. Su mamá, su papá, sus hermanos, Abuela y Pipo, abuela y abuelo, Sara, Jaid, Angelina, Leah, Parker: ella los ama mucho a todos y está muy agradecida por todos ustedes.

Nunca habría podido superar los últimos cuatro años de Elon sin mi madre a mi lado. Ella es mi roca. Siempre ahí para mí. Ella siempre contesta el teléfono sin importar la hora del día o de la noche. Ella siempre está lista para acompañarme por teléfono en mi camino a casa después de enseñar esperando escuchar todas mis historias. ¡Muchas gracias mami por todo lo que haces por mí! Te quiero mucho!!! Tia Tata estoy tan emocionada por tenerte aquí finalmente después de tantos años!! Te quiero muchísimo!! Ambos sois una parte increíblemente importante de mi pueblo.

Nunca imaginé estar donde estoy hoy, pero nunca podría haber llegado aquí por mi cuenta, tanta gente me ha empujado constantemente a dar lo mejor de mí. Me gustaría agradecer a mis profesores de biología que me ayudaron a fomentar una pasión eterna por la ciencia. Mi mentor de investigación por despertarse conmigo todas las mañanas del verano a las 5 a.m. para escuchar a los pájaros. A mis amigos que han estado conmigo desde el principio en las buenas y en las malas. Finalmente, a mi mamá y a mi papá quienes fueron los que me dieron la oportunidad de estudiar en esta escuela, su arduo trabajo se refleja a través de mí y sé que los he enorgullecido. Siempre han estado aquí para atraparme cuando caigo y abrazarme cuando lo necesito. Muchas gracias por hacer de mí la joven increíble que soy hoy, a punto de pasar a la siguiente etapa de mi vida.
