2023-24 Annual Report
At the start of the 2023-24 academic year, I put forth a charge to our faculty and staff that we embrace 4 C’s: Communication, Collaboration, Culture and Community.
At our core, our school – led by true teachers-scholars-mentors – provides life-altering experiences for our students. By building strong emotional and social connections, coupled with rigorous academic offerings, we place students on the path to success. Our faculty and staff build these same connections with one another. This is our culture, and we have dedicated much of the past year to investing in it and protecting it.
As we grow, offering transformative opportunities on campus, in Los Angeles and New York, and now Charlotte, we have made it a priority to invest in our culture and strengthen the community that students praise.
To ensure Elon Comm stays true to itself, we initiated several steps. We reinforced our efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion with the hiring of Vanessa Bravo as the school’s assistant dean of DEI and assessment. We welcomed longtime colleague Brad Lemack as director of Elon University Los Angeles. And we continued our curriculum revision process to better serve the needs of our current and future students. We also introduced smaller gestures to bolster our collective bonds – more faculty-staff social gatherings, regular dean’s memos, and a swankier coffee machine. Our faculty and staff run on coffee.
While our ACEJMC accreditation self-study and subsequent evaluation have been top of mind this year, we know – and recognize – that people are our foundation. It is our commitment to teaching, to mentorship, and to supporting one another that makes us one of the finest communications schools in the country.
Let us celebrate the conclusion of a successful 2023-24 academic year and remain cognizant that who we are is as important was what we do. We also look forward to celebrating our 25th anniversary as a school with you next year.

During his two decades at Elon, retiring Associate Professor of Journalism Rich Landesberg became synonymous with the following phrase: “We don’t work for awards, but we always strive to do award-winning work.”
The pursuit isn’t about accolades, but a job well done. Our school, students, faculty and staff embrace such a mindset – though it is nice to receive a little acknowledgment here and there.
For the third consecutive year Elon Comm was named to the PRNEWS Education A-List, a competitive distinction shared by 20 U.S. institutions recognized for preparing future public relations and marketing professionals. The list bills itself as the “ultimate comprehensive guide dedicated to the best higher learning institutions for public relations and communications.”
The school also continues to build on its success in the Broadcast Education Association’s annual rankings of schools based on student achievements in the Festival of Media Arts, earning a third consecutive top-10 finish. Elon students collected a total of nine awards in BEA’s 2024 festival, with Max Wallace ’26 leading the way with two awards.
Likewise, The Pendulum, Elon’s student-run newspaper, earned several top honors from the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards, including the Corbin Gwaltney Award for Best All-Around Student Newspaper. The Corbin Gwaltney Award, named after the co-founder of The Chronicle of Higher Education, recognizes the effort and dedication of student-run newspapers based on two divisions: large and small. The Pendulum was honored in the small university division, 1 to 9,999 students, and received a $5,000 prize.
Top-5 finish in Hearst competition
Journalism major Madison Powers ’24 placed fifth in the Hearst Journalism Awards explanatory reporting competition in the spring, earning a $1,000 cash prize. The Communications Fellow’s work, which examined the migration crisis on the United States-Mexico border, was selected out of 123 entries from 74 universities nationwide.
