University Parliamentarian
The University Parliamentarian is appointed by the President and serves the institution as an informational resource for the interpretation and application of parliamentary procedure: the code of rules and customs that protect “the right of free and fair debate, the right of the majority to decide, and the right of the minority to protest and be protected” (Sturgis, p. 1). In addition to advising the presiding officer on parliamentary procedure during meetings of the faculty, in which business is conducted, the parliamentarian is available to all faculty and staff to assist them in fair and effective discussion and decision-making within the university.
As noted in the Faculty Handbook, all meetings and other business of the faculty are conducted according to Sturgis Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure.
Sturgis states that, when the parliamentarian is a member of the organization as opposed to a hired expert, the president of the organization appoints the parliamentarian. There are currently no term limits set for the Parliamentatian.
