Fall 2024 – Data Nexus Communities of Practices

Data Nexus hosted a general data COP. Not sure what data to integrate into your class or perhaps you collect data in class or as part of your research but want to integrate basic data analytics methodology or technology. Then this Community of Practice(COP) is for you.

Some ideas for sessions, which will be chosen based on the population, include (1) what data should I integrate? (2) sentiment analysis (3) understanding hypothesis testing (4) basic R or python data visualization & interpretation.

Data Nexus Scholar, Steve DeLoach, hosted a Data Nexus COP focused on Course Imbedded Research. If you are interested in this please reach out to deloach@elon.edu.

Spring 2024 – Data Nexus Community of Practice

Teaching faculty focused on was to infuse data into their 2024-2025 classes. This COP focused on discussions around infusing the advanced data competency SLOs:

  • Students think critically about when and what data are needed, assess data sources appropriate to the information needed, and identify the context in which data are produced and used.
  • Students access, or collect when appropriate, data and explain the ethical considerations of how this data is collected and used.

Sessions included:

  • Session 1: Guest Presenter: Amanda Kleintop (Assistant Professor of History), who discussed infusing Qualitative data into classes with Source Analyses and Archive Digs and
Guest Presenters: Shannon Tennant (Associate Librarian), and Patrick Rudd (Assistant Librarian), who discussed Elon Library Data Resources.
  • Session 2: Guest Presenter: Nicholas Bussberg (Assistant Professor of Statistics), who discussed data in media and the ethical considerations of how this data is collected and used and
Guest Presenter: Elizabeth von Briesen (Assistant Professor of Computer Science), who discussed incorporating PolicyMap and Social Explorer to create meaningful projects.
  • Session 3: Work session in which participants discussed the application for Data Intensive Designation and continued development on how to infuse data into their future classes.
