Phoenix Rhetorix: Elon Journal of Exemplary First-Year Writing
What does it mean to write in 2024-2025? How are the demands of literacy evolving to address the vast spectrum of texts, voices, and perspectives in online spaces, especially in a time of rapid political and social change? How do new writing tools transform the way we communicate and engage with the pressing issues of our era? In a world where misinformation and digital platforms shape public discourse, how do we develop the literacies needed to participate meaningfully in society? What human perspectives are newly illuminated by recent events, and which are potentially stifled?
This year, Phoenix Rhetorix is seeking pieces of student work that explore the ways technology shapes the ways we experience the world and understand ourselves. We hope to publish projects that accomplish one or more of the following:
- Seeks to understand the variety of human experiences;
- Thoughtfully considers personal biases and/or identities;
- Demonstrates excellent research practices;
- Takes risks in genre and/or is experimental in voice or style;
- Advocates for change to improve the local and global community.
Phoenix Rhetorix invites submissions that have been produced in any genre—ranging from personal reflections to creative explorations and from research essays to digital artwork. Projects of various lengths, approaches, and forms are welcome. Submissions utilizing generative AI, as permitted by course policies, are equally welcome.
To submit an entry to the contest and for publication in the journal, fill out the Submissions Form. Students are welcome to submit your own work and we highly encourage faculty to submit excellent student work. The submissions deadline for Fall 2024 is 11:59 PM on December 17, 2024, and the deadline for Spring 2025 submission is 11:59 PM on May 22, 2025.
