Elon University’s Isabella Cannon Global Education Center (GEC) is committed to supporting safe, healthy, and inclusive global engagement experiences (which includes Study Abroad, Study USA, and non-Elon petitions) for students, faculty and staff leaders, and university partners. The Elon University Student Handbook stipulates that students who violate university policies and are placed on a disciplinary status may lose the privilege of participating in study abroad/away programs during an active probationary status. This policy is in place to support individual and community safety and well-being.

Students wishing to appeal to participate in global engagement during a probationary status must promptly complete the GEC Appeal Request Form.

Submission of an appeal form does not guarantee approval to study away. The appeal review will consider the following factors and may consider any information the student chooses to provide:

  • Severity, risk, and harm related to the incident resulting in probationary status
  • The time between the incident and departure date for the program
  • Previous disciplinary violations
  • Completion/progress/compliance related to any educational or restorative sanctions assigned in the university process
  • Honesty, accountability, self-awareness, growth, and learning as demonstrated in the university process and any subsequent actions
  • Any relevant context of the specific study away program

The initial review may result in any of the following responses:

  • Determination that the restriction from global engagement is upheld and the student is not eligible to participate during their probationary period
  • Request for a meeting or additional information before making a determination
  • Approval to participate in global engagement program with no additional stipulations
  • Approval to participate in global engagement program with additional stipulations

The GEC will issue a response in writing to the student’s Elon email.
