Current Committee Members

Taylor Brown is the lab manager for Biology and Environmental Studies. Mr. Brown is responsible for oversight of the daily care of lab animals at Elon.

Dr. Amo B. Burbridge is the senior partner at Alamance Veterinary Hospital and has been part of the practice since 1998, the year of her graduation from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Chunco is a wildlife ecologist and assistant professor of Environmental Studies at Elon University. Her work integrates field studies with geographic models to aid the conservation of rare and endangered species. She is especially interested in the conservation challenges associated with climate change and invasive species. She is also a past Chair of the IACUC.

Dave Gammon is a Professor of Biology at Elon University. He has over 20 years of experience doing bird research in the field and in the lab.

Greg Hlavaty is a Lecturer in English at Elon University. He teaches first-year writing, environmental literature, and bridge classes for local high school students.

In addition to his position as a Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies, Dr. Kingston served as the past Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Curator of the Elon University Roger Barbour Collection of wildlife images. His research focuses on photosynthetic microbial communities inhabiting the sediments of streams, estuaries, and ocean beaches. He teaches a variety of courses on the following topics: population biology, biodiversity, ecology, and ocean sustainability. He is also a summer adjunct faculty member at the Duke University Marine Laboratory where he teaches a marine ecology course.

Dr. Perreault is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Elon University. She primarily teaches Genetics, but also teaches Introductory Seminar and Biotechnology. Her research focuses on integrative genomics and understanding how the human genome’s organization is disrupted in various cancers. Although her research focuses on humans and is entirely computational, Dr. Perreault values the need for animal research by faculty and students at Elon.

William Schreiber is the chair of the IACUC. He is a faculty member in Psychology who studies learning, memory, and stress. His lab examines invertebrate learning and stress in harvester ants; he studies simple forms of learning (habituation, sensitization, associative learning) with the aim of characterizing and understanding how relatively simple nervous systems can learn and remember information. He is also interested in how invertebrates respond to short- and long-term stressors, and how this might interact with learning and memory processes. His human focused research focuses on the interactions of stress, attention, and memory.

Dr. Shaffer has worked in the field of DNA testing for human identification for many years, including for parentage, forensic testing, and HLA testing to support stem cell transplantation.  She assisted with the victim identification project following Hurricane Katrina and has testified as an expert witness in numerous trials.  Dr. Shaffer received her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology in 2000 from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA.  She is the current chair of the AABB Relationship Testing Standards Committee, and assists with updating and publishing standards for this committee.  She is currently a Technical Director with Labcorp.

Dr. Vick teaches Human and Animal Physiology as well as Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, and Senior Seminar. His research focuses on various aspects of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), and several of his students have presented their research at local, regional, and national meetings. Dr. Vick is also a pre-health advisor and faculty advisor for the Pre-Dental Society and the Lincoln Pre-Health Society.
