Description

The First Phoenix Living-Learning Community welcomes incoming first-year and sophomore Elon students who identify as first-generation (a student whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have not obtained a bachelor’s degree). The goal of the community is to create an environment where first-generation college students successfully acclimate and navigate their college experience, ideate their potential through support and mentorship, and reach their desired goals. Through intentional connections with first-generation college peers, faculty, and staff, first-generation college students’ academic, professional, social, and personal development will be nurtured. Members of the First Phoenix LLC will be a part of The First Phoenix, peer-mentoring program, a campus-wide initiative connecting first-generation first-year students to upper class, first-generation students. Through the program students will engage in workshops, mentoring, and other co-curricular activities to gain a deeper understanding
of their identities and how it relates to their future and broader Elon community. The LLC will also be
connected to the First-Generation Student Support Services office in The Center for Access and Success,
First-Gen Student Society.

Students in the First Phoenix LLC will interact through intentional programming with the First-Generation Student Society, a student group on Elon’s campus. Through this group, opportunities for informal mentorship exist as well as fun and informative activities designed to connect first-gen students with each other and non-first-gen peers. Being a part of a peer group that also welcomes students outside of the group’s primary identity has been shown to be a priority for first-generation students. Students in the First Phoenix LLC who are in their 1st year at Elon, will participate in a cohorted class designed for the first-year experience at Elon that supports the group community, their unique needs, and assists students in integrating into the wider first-year community at Elon. The First Phoenix LLC advisors will work with a designated Core 1100 instructor to create content and experiences that link the LLC to the course in meaningful, engaged learning experiences. First-Generation Student Support Services in the Center for Access and Success will support all students in the transition and acclimation to college life through programming, community building, and informational workshops. This is done through socials and mixers, connecting first-gen students to scholarship opportunities, laptop loans and technology support, inviting students to mentoring relationships, informational sessions, and activities
