The Historic Neighborhood is the heart of Elon because of the rich histories and traditions that signify the campus experience, from the calm presence of its storied oaks to the strength of the brick pathways that have supported the journeys of students since the 19th Century. As the traditional “campus core,” this Neighborhood has provided the backdrop for new student convocations, senior photos, commencement exercises, concerts, parties, receptions, picnics, and more.

Students in Historic Neighborhood will be invited to explore, connect, practice well-being, and celebrate the Elon experience together. These outcomes reflect the mission and spirit of the neighborhood and the needs of students in their first year on campus.

Neighborhood Student Population

Historic is a first-year residential neighborhood, home to nearly 700 students at Elon! This vibrant community allows students to connect with others who are also new to Elon and navigating the same transition, while receiving support and resources from various staff and faculty members who work in the neighborhood.

*Please note that HBB is undergoing Phase 2 renovations this Summer 2024. Built in desks/storage areas are being removed and free standing desks/furniture (similar to other Historic buildings) will be installed. Updated photos will be posted upon project completion.

Neighborhood Amenities

LaRose Student Commons – Lounge area, communal kitchen & dining, vending machines, pool table, ping pong table, meeting room, neighborhood office
McEwen Dining Hall – This dining hall is conveniently located in our neighborhood with easy access for students to enjoy meals throughout the day without having to venture far from their residence hall.

Living-Learning Communities in the Neighborhood

Signature Programs, Traditions, and Experiences

Residents have an opportunity to learn from one another, meet peers within their community and hear from campus partners in an informal setting through various neighborhood programming.

Historic Fun Fest – This welcome event is geared toward introducing Historic residents to the neighborhood, providing the opportunity to meet the neighborhood leadership team, student staff, and key neighborhood partners while enjoying food, music, games & more!
Spooky Open Mic Night – Each semester, we host an open mic night on Mooney Lawn where students in the neighborhood can showcase their various talents! In the past we’ve had students sing, play instruments, perform spoken word, etc. In October, this event takes on a spooky theme with the option to dress up and indulge in Halloween-themed goodies.
West Birthday Party – In celebration of Elon’s oldest building on campus, each November we hold a birthday party for West Residence Hall. West has been the beloved campus home for generations of Elon students, and is the backdrop for the annual Under the Oaks celebration of Opening Convocation!
Historic Block Party – As the academic year ends, each May we celebrate with a neighborhood-wide block party that stretches from Under the Oaks to HBB Courts. In the past, this event has featured live music, food trucks, make and take crafts, lawn games, caricature drawings, and other exciting activities!

Faculty Engagement

The Faculty Director (FD) and Faculty-in-Residence (FIR) live in the neighborhood and are responsible for establishing academic linkages with the neighborhood and fostering learning and engagement opportunities. This includes but is not limited to holding weekly office hours in LaRose Commons, facilitating weekly signature events, monthly traditions, and special activities.

Sunday S’mores – Each Sunday, the FD hosts s’mores at the McEwen Fire pit. This is a great opportunity to engage with a faculty member outside of the classroom, connect with peers, and enjoy a sweet fireside treat.
Stargazing Nights – In collaboration with the Danieley Neighborhood and Astronomy club, each semester, our Faculty Director holds a stargazing night at Lake Verona. This program has been a favorite among the students!

Our amazing Senior Resident Assistants and Resident Assistants are responsible for planning and hosting multiple programs throughout the semester! Make sure to look out for flyers and emails or reach out to your RA directly for more information.

Support our Athletes

This year, Elon’s Residence Life team along with Athletics are hosting Neighborhood Game Nights! Be sure to tap in at the Athletic Marketing table at each game to earn Historic points in the Neighborhood Game Day Challenge!
