SHPEP is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage. SHPEP, formerly known as the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), expanded in 2016 to include a broader array of health professions.
Pathways to Science

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1)REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects.

Organizational Science Summer Institute

The Organizational Science Summer Institute is designed to provide underrepresented undergraduate students (rising juniors and seniors) with a unique educational opportunity with the following goals:
- Foster undergraduate interest and ability in research, scholarship, application and graduate study

Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

The Pediatric Oncology Education program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is funded by the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute. The Summer Student Research Program – Maine Medical Center Research Institute

Department of Homeland Security

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) Disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM Disciplines and DHS mission-relevant Research Areas. U.S. Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Leadership Alliance Summer Research

Since 1992, the Leadership Alliance has encouraged students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities to pursue research careers in the academic, public and private sectors. SR-EIP provides undergraduates with training and mentoring in the principles underlying the conduct of research and prepares them to pursue competitive applications to graduate schools. German Academic Exchange Service Summer Research Grant

This specialized DAAD program offers German Studies Research Grants to highly-qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are nominated by their department/program chairs. The grant may be used for short-term research (one to two months) in Germany. The program is designed to encourage research and promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic and social aspects of modern and contemporary German affairs from an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective.
German Academic Exchange Service Research Internships in Science and Engineering

RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. RISE offers unique opportunities for Bachelor students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities & research institutes provide housing assistance.
Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics

The Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics (SIBS) offers a comprehensive six to seven week summer training course on biostatistics with relevant examples that include data collected in studies of heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. Designed to address a growing imbalance between the demand and supply for biostatisticians, the course targets undergraduates and beginning graduate students who are interested in learning about biostatistics. The program will provide an intensive introduction to biostatistical approaches and research by exposing participants to the principles, methodologies, uses, and applications of statistical methods in biomedical and clinical research. The program was initiated in 2004 at Boston University, North Carolina State University, and the University of Wisconsin and has since been expanded. The NHLBI now supports eight SIBS programs, with co-sponsorship from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).

Boston University Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

Each summer, 10-20 outstanding students conduct full-time research in a BU lab. Normally, 2-3 positions are reserved for Boston University students, who act as peer mentors to the other participants. The remaining positions are offered to students from other colleges and universities, particularly those without plentiful research opportunities. SURF is designed to encourage graduate education in the sciences for talented undergraduate students, especially those from minority groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences: African-American, Hispanic, Native American/Native Alaskan, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian/Polynesian or students from institutions with limited research opportunities.
Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides college students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (short for science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.
National Energy Technology Laboratory

The Professional Internship Program is designed to introduce undergraduate and graduate students to the challenges of conducting energy research. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program at RWTH Aachen University fosters research partnerships between qualified undergraduates from top US and Canadian universities and research faculty at our university. UROP International offers undergraduate students the unique chance to conduct their own research project, thus actively experiencing what research is like at an early stage of their academic career. Summer Program at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences

The Access program of Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences (WCGS) is a summer internship program that trains underserved college students in the biomedical sciences. Interns gain hands-on experience in a biomedical research laboratory and are encouraged to apply to PhD programs. Selected students are placed in laboratories at the Weill Cornell Medical College under the mentorship of experienced faculty members. In addition to the laboratory experience, students attend lectures and discussions aimed at enhancing their understanding of the current status of biomedical research, the pathways available for entering research careers, and the range of available career opportunities. Students also participate in weekly journal clubs, attend workshops that teach them how to prepare for interviews and seminars, and take part in social activities.
Amgen Scholars Program

The Amgen Scholars Program is designed to recruit exceptional students interested in careers in biological and biomedical sciences with an intensive 10-week laboratory experience at one of the top research institutions in the nation. Scholars will engage in an independent research project under the mentorship of faculty at Washington University in St. Louis. Successful applicants are not required to have had prior research experience but are required to be currently enrolled in a U.S. undergraduate program. Applications from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the sciences (African Americans, Latin Americans, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders) are strongly encouraged to apply. We also encourage students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and those who attend small liberal arts colleges to apply.
Natural History Research Experience

The National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, hosts a world-class research staff and unparalleled scientific research collections. NHRE summer internships pair undergraduates with museum scientists to complete a research project in Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Invertebrate Zoology, Mineral Science, Paleobiology, or Vertebrate Zoology. Although the majority of time during the internship is spent working on the research project, there are additional events including lectures, tours of museum collections, and other activities related to natural history research.
EuroScholars

EuroScholars is a unique research abroad programme designed for advanced and talented undergraduate students from US and Canadian institutions looking for an international research experience. The EuroScholars Program offers these students to conduct research at one of the 9 internationally renowned European Research Universities. In this programme, students have the opportunity to undertake one or two courses in the classroom and then work under the direct supervision of professors and other academic staff on a specific academic research project chosen by both the student and the faculty. Caltech’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program

Caltech’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program introduces students to research under the guidance of seasoned research mentors at Caltech and JPL. Students experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity. SURF is modeled on the grant-seeking process: Students collaborate with potential mentors to define and develop a project. Applicants write research proposals for their projects. A faculty committee reviews the proposals and recommends awards. Students carry out the work over a 10-week period in the summer, mid-June to late August. At the conclusion of the program, they submit a technical paper and give an oral presentation at SURF Seminar Day, a symposium modeled on a professional technical meeting.

The Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, sponsors a ten-week research program for outstanding undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in the biomedical sciences. Applicants must have research experience. Students in the program have the opportunity to: obtain hands-on research experience in cutting-edge laboratories, interact with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, attend a weekly luncheon/seminar series of presentations by faculty, attend skills development workshops to hone presentation and interview skills and attend and present at works-in-progress sessions with the cohort of SURP students.

The ACS International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (IREU) is an exchanges that allows talented young chemical and materials scientists to spend a summer conducting research in another country. Students spend 10-12 weeks working on frontier chemical and materials science research projects under the guidance of faculty members and graduate student mentors to sharpen scientific skills, develop collaborations with scientists abroad, and experience the life and culture of a foreign country.

The UCLA Summer Programs for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) offer upper division undergraduate students with outstanding academic potential the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors on research projects. The programs are designed for students who wish to learn more about the graduate school experience and possibly pursue an academic career in teaching and research. Opportunities are available in virtually all academic fields (e.g., arts, humanities, social sciences, life sciences, health sciences, physical sciences, etc.). Each student participant will be working with a faculty mentor with special expertise and interests matched, as closely as possible, to the student’s research interests and career goals.
