The plan by neighborhood: Colonnades

In the fall of 2011, with the addition of 3 new buildings and 279 students (70% first-year, 20% sophomore, 10% junior/senior), the Colonnades will become a strong residential neighborhood with a mix of all four class years, faculty involvement, academic and social spaces and close proximity to the Love School of Business, McMichael Science building, and the Colonnades Dining Hall. Each of the three new “houses” will ultimately build a reputation, traditions and sense of pride around a unifying theme, which might be generic or serve as a programmatic connector between Business and the Sciences (possibly even a pilot health sciences, environment, and/or entrepreneurship theme). These themes will be developed over time organically from residents and affiliated faculty.

Highlights of the Colonnades Neighborhood will include:

  • colonnades elevationThree new Houses (with a mix of 93 students in each) designed specifically to provide appropriate spaces for all four class years to live, socialize, study, and take courses in a residential college type setting.
  • New social and academic common spaces, including large first floor lobbies, high-tech seminar rooms, a glassed in classroom/seminar room (2/3 size of Inman Reading Room), a learning lab space for a student group to showcase their businesses or organization, and also floor lounges, study rooms and kitchenettes.
  • Three faculty apartments with living rooms for house socials. Two bedrooms, large living rooms, washer/dryer and dishwashers. External apartment entrances to allow for privacy.
  • Faculty-in-Residence assigned to develop relationships, teach courses, lead discussions, provide advising, and attend programs with residents in each new building.

  • A mix of Learning Communities: Sustainable Living, Business, Health and Wellness, Honors floor, and the Math/Science/Engineering Learning Community.
  • Layered mentoring supporting/connecting younger students to junior/senior mentors serving in a range of roles including RAs, TAs, team teaching with faculty, tutors, peer educators, etc.
  • A dining hall that serves Colonnades neighborhood and provides access to the Love School of Business, McMichael Science Building, Daniel Commons, the Moseley Center and Belk Library.
  • Spacious double rooms sharing bathrooms for first year students (70%).
  • Sophomore pod suites with two single rooms, a bathroom and a small living room (20%).
  • Stand-alone Junior/Senior singles with stackable washers and dryers and private bathrooms (10%).
  • Two existing buildings (built in 2007) with predominately sophomore, junior and senior residents.
