The plan by neighborhood: Global Neighborhood

The new Global Neighborhood will be the model for the re-envisioned residential campus at Elon. More importantly, the programs, activities, services, and experiences will transform the area into a premiere global education residential complex serving as a major campus destination for all members of the Elon community and fostering interactions among faculty, staff, and students of all class years. Situated on Lake Mary Nell and adjacent to the quad containing Belk Library, Moseley Center, and Koury Center, this area is geographically positioned to become a showpiece complex for the Elon campus. It will be a dynamic neighborhood where learning and active engagement takes place throughout the day and night for all Elon students. The vision is one of energy, engagement and enthusiasm.

Highlights of the Global Neighborhood will include:

  • global village & dining hallFour named houses with a mix of 150 students in each; high-tech classrooms and a learning lab (e.g. black box theater, recording studio, dance studio, etc.) in each house.
  • First-year students taking the Global Experience class from faculty-in-residence or faculty affiliates.
  • Visiting international faculty scholars-in-residence who teach courses in the neighborhood.
  • Guest housing for Fulbright and visiting lecturers/speakers to interact with students.
  • A relocated and expanded Isabella Cannon International Centre, including a theater for international conferencing, an international movie festival, workshops by study abroad students, etc.
  • global siteplanA distinctive, student hangout with an international café with programming space for the neighborhood and campus, where students, faculty and staff can gather for discussions after events and students study and socialize into the late night hours.
  • The Cannon International Pavilion program and students relocated to one the houses, along with the language learning communities – La Casa de Español, La Maison Francaise, Japanese House, La Casa Italiana, and Deutsches Haus.
  • A dining hall that serves the Global Neighborhood, expanding dining and meeting spaces for the entire campus, and taking advantage of the view of Lake Mary Nell.
  • Offices for faculty affiliates who teach the Global Experience in the neighborhood
  • Layered mentoring by junior/senior serving in a range of roles (e.g. RAs, TAs, team teaching with faculty, foreign language and study abroad mentors, tutors, study abroad or multicultural education mentors).
  • 70%  first-years (in doubles), 20% sophomores (in pods of singles), 10% juniors/seniors (in stand-alone singles).
  • Outdoor reflection spaces; views of the lake; an outdoor plaza that flows from the buildings where outdoor activities and formal/informal debates occur (connecting with the West Lawn of Moseley); outdoor seating areas with grills and outdoor games; and international banners to create a visual excitement of the global/international theme
