Highlights from Academic Council in 2024
Shared governance is a defining feature of Elon University’s approach to educating and mentoring students – and several achievements over the past year are a result of strong working relationships between faculty and the university administration.
Elon University’s model of shared governance begins with Academic Council, a coordinating committee of faculty that deliberates on matters within their province for the purpose of formulating general policy.
As chair of Academic Council for 2024-2025, Professor Rissa Trachman and her colleagues worked with administrators to advance institutional priorities connected to the Boldly Elon strategic plan goal of championing and exceptional faculty and staff.
Academic Council Highlights of 2024
- Updated names of faculty ranks: Academic Council led efforts that recently culminated with approval by Elon University’s Board of Trustees to rename to “Teaching Track” what was previously known as “Lecturer Track.” Those faculty previously in that rank can now hold the rank of assistant teaching professor, associate teaching professor and teaching professor.
- Establishment of a service working group: Service comes in many forms – some visible, like involvement on faculty recruitment committees, and some “hidden,” like time spent mentoring junior colleagues. Academic Council and the Office of the Provost have established a working group that is conducting a study of the way faculty serve the university and how that service can best be documented.
- Improvements to the faculty handbook: Described by Trachman as “essentially an employment agreement” between faculty and the university, Academic Council formed and charged the Handbook Functionality Working Group with creating a better flow for the handbook and working with technology staff to bring Elon University’s handbook into a user-friendly web format that is easy to search and easy to update.
“One of the things I believe is important as chair of Academic Council is to offer space for faculty to express themselves,” Trachman said, “and Academic Council has always been a governing body that encourages and responds to faculty proposals and concerns.”
Academic Council acts in an advisory capacity to Elon University’s president with setting priorities and planning long-range goals. It also advises the administration in the early stages of explorations of new programs that do not originate in a department or school.
In addition to elected Promotion and Tenure and University Curriculum Committee members, Academic Council appoints faculty to the standing committees that bring proposals to the council for consideration.
For Trachman, Academic Council’s progress toward the establishment of new titles of faculty rank tops her list of achievements in 2024. “This amplifies their permanence,” she said. “Being able to do this really articulates the value we have for faculty that focus their work on teaching our students.”
