Research leads to NIH scholarship

Genesis Tolbert, a biochemistry major and Odyssey Program scholar, worked with her mentor to research the impact that products such as handheld sparklers have on people’s health. Her efforts landed her a scholarship from the National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholar Program.

Engineering major builds race car with team

Nick Muller, an engineering major and an Honors Program participant, co-founded Phoenix Racing, a team of engineering majors that designed and built a Formula 1 electric race car.

Student: Kaley Katz

Cancer diagnosis is catalyst for leukemia research

Kaley Katz, a biology major, spent her childhood participating in bone marrow drives after a transplant cured her cousin. Kaley continued those drives at Elon and researched ASXL1 protein variations in leukemic cell lines to prepare for a career in genetic counseling.

Matt Newberry, a communication design and Spanish major, takes on leadership roles in Elon clubs and organizations and studies abroad in Spain to prepare for professional opportunities.

Experiencing a well-rounded education

Mallory Poff, an engineering major and percussionist, wanted to be in an engineering program that allowed her to experience more than just STEM classes. While at Elon, Mallory designed and built a solar-powered cooling unit, tutored, volunteered, studied abroad and was a drum major leading the marching band.

Carl Hairston ’11 G’15 used the knowledge gained through his marketing major and sport management minor to work his way up to associate commissioner for marketing and content strategy at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in Charlotte.

Entrepreneur credits Elon for leadership and management skills

Ryan Vet ’13, a marketing major, learned how to lead and manage his employees through his experiences and work with faculty and staff. The entrepreneur, who opened the Elon Oak House and the Oak House Durham, now provides the same mentorship to students through his work on the advisory board for the Doherty Center for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.
