Intrigued by pandemic supply chain issues, student switches up major, joins Dow Chemical
Radhika Tawade entered Elon University in the fall of 2019, intent on majoring in business analytics. The subject matter — using visualizations and different analytical software systems to create business insights for companies —was intriguing to her.
Then the pandemic hit. And among the headlines Tawade kept seeing were those about how supply chains were backed up, leading to shortages of everything from face masks to toilet paper.
I’ve been able to learn so much from my classes at Elon, and working at Dow this past summer solidified my love of the field.
“I wanted to know more about what was going on behind the scenes with companies affected by these shortages,” said Tawade, who graduated from Elon in 2023 with a double major in supply chain management and business analytics. “I became incredibly interested in how I could help companies analyze data and guide them through logistic system issues, so I added a supply chain management major into the mix.”
The summer before her senior year, Tawade landed an internship at Dow Chemical as an integrated supply chain intern. There, she was able to put the lessons learned at Elon into practice. She was assigned to find better warehouse locations for clients and create a cost-to-serve analysis of options. She helped create a database to store client information and create visualizations to update client status. And throughout her projects, she was tasked with keeping her colleagues updated, using virtual meetings and email threads.
“I was added to projects that really pushed me out of my comfort zone,” she said. “I fell in love with meeting new people and deciphering tough problems with colleagues. When I was offered to return as a supply chain rotation program specialist, I couldn’t say no!”
That offer brought her back to Dow’s headquarters in Michigan upon graduating from Elon, working as a full-time supply chain rotational program specialist.
“I’ve been able to learn so much from my classes at Elon, and working at Dow this past summer solidified my love of the field,” Tawade said.
