Nursing Fellows is a selective merit-based program for academically strong students who are committed to pursuing a nursing career. Learn more about Nursing Fellows on the program website.

Students selected to participate in the Nursing Fellows program spend four years working closely with faculty mentors exploring the many opportunities within the field of nursing and identifying ways to impact health disparities in local and global communities.

Program Highlights

  • Explore nursing in the context of health care provision, deepening their personal commitment to becoming a nurse.
  • Work closely with staff, faculty and advisers across the university to pursue academic and professional opportunities.
  • Participate in interprofessional health care panels and group dinners with undergraduate peers in the pre-health sciences.
  • Investigate service and certification opportunities specific to nursing with guidance from the Kernodle Center for Civic Life.
  • Engage in personal identity, reflection and resume-building activities guided by the Student 🧑‍🎓Professional Development Center.
  • Complete a four-year academic and career plan.
  • Volunteer at the Health Outreach Program (HOPE) at Elon, the Open Door Clinic of Alamance County or another location affiliated with the Alamance Network for Inclusive Health Care.
  • Participate in a Winter Term study abroad course specifically related to health care.
  • Contribute to local and global health equity through clinical experiences and courses dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion in health care.

Who should apply?

Students who plan to major in nursing and have a GPA of 3.8 or higher should apply. Twenty-five academically talented students pursuing nursing as a major are selected based on their high school academic performance, scholarship essay prompt on the first-year application and a faculty interview. Engineering Fellows applications are due November 1 (priority) or January 10.

Scholarship

All 25 Nursing Fellows receive a $7,500 scholarship, renewable annually based on academic performance and program participation.  Each student also receives a one-time $1,000 Global Study grant for a university-approved study abroad or Study USA experience.
