2025 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients

Since 1941, the Office of Alumni Engagement has presented awards to honor alumni of Elon University who serve as active partners, advocates and investors. The Distinguished Alumni Awards are presented each spring and are the highest accolades conferred by the Office of Alumni Engagement.


Distinguished Alumnus of the Year
Awarded to an alumnus who has distinguished himself in a profession and in the community and brought honor to Elon.

Sam Troy '67Sam Troy ’67

A devoted steward of his alma mater and community, Sam Troy has enjoyed a rewarding career in international business driven in part by his life-changing study abroad experiences at Elon.

Sam earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Elon before furthering his education with a master’s degree from East Carolina University and an advanced degree from the College of Europe in Belgium. Sam currently serves as executive-in-residence at the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where his primary focus has been conducting research on and promoting the North Carolina wine industry.

He is the epitome of an engaged Elon alumnus, faithfully supporting the university with a gift every year since he graduated as well as volunteering his time. In addition to his generous financial contributions, Sam previously served as an alumni volunteer, Alumni 360 volunteer, class reunion volunteer, Elon Career Mentor, Elon Alumni Board member and National Alumni Executive Board member.

Akilah Weaver Hill ’00Akilah Weaver Hill ’00 

Akilah Weaver Hill graduated from Elon in 2000 as a Jefferson Pilot Business Fellow with a degree in marketing and a minor in economics, later graduating with her MBA from Strayer University in 2008. Currently a program manager of various work/life benefit programs at Bank of America, Akilah develops the programs’ $75 million budget for 200,000 U.S. based employees.

During her time as a student, Akilah was the first black female president of the Student Government Association, a Student Ambassador, Elon’s Homecoming Chair, Vice President of the Elon Gospel Choir and was involved with the Black Cultural Society, SMART Mentors and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Akilah is currently the Vice Chair of the Deltas of Charlotte Foundation and continues to stay connected to the university as a member of the Women of Elon Advisory Council, the Elon Black Alumni Network and the 1889 Society. Akilah’s engagement has been recognized on Elon’s African American Hall of Fame and with the presentation of the Gail Fonville Parker ’70 Distinguished Alumna Award in 2019.


Distinguished Service to Elon
Awarded to an organization, business, foundation or individual who has demonstrated outstanding service that promotes the advancement of Elon.

Mike CrossMike Cross

Currently the President of Acrisure Re North America, Mike Cross has spent over forty-two years in the reinsurance industry, focusing on large property reinsurance programs in the Southeast. His current work focuses on developing and executing Acrisure Re’s North American strategic plan, aligning it with the broader corporate strategy and communicating a compelling vision for the business.

A member of the local community, Mike has served on the boards of Alamance Country Club and Friends of the Alamance County Public Libraries. His engagement with the university includes his almost two-decade role as a Phoenix Club Advisory Board Member, as well as a member of the President’s Round Table and the 1889 Society.

As a supporter of Elon Athletics, Mike’s gifts have been directed to the Phoenix Club, Rhodes Stadium, the Schar Center and various team sports.


Distinguished Alumni Service
Presented to an alum who has given extraordinary service to their community.

Cecelia Thompson '05Cecelia Thompson ’05

A political science, public administration and sociology major, Cecelia Thompson remained in the local community after graduation and has spent the last 10+ years serving as the Executive Director of Action Greensboro, an economic development nonprofit. Cecelia’s recent work at the nonprofit includes co-chairing infrastructure bond campaigns that have secured two billion dollars for the Guilford County Schools Facilities Master Plan.

The creator of Boomerang Greensboro, a relocation and job placement service, Cecelia is also the co-founder of Young, Smart, and Local, a national learning network of more than fifty cities. She continues to serve on several boards including the NC Early Childhood Foundation, Union Square Campus, Guilford Education Alliance and NC Humanities Council.

Cecelia’s engagement has been recognized with the presentation of the Triad Business Journal’s 2018 Outstanding Women in Business award and 40 Leaders Under Forty award in 2010.
