2011 Burst the Bubble Programs
Burst the Bubble programs are free, student-led, non-credit sessions where students who have a talent, interest, or skill share their knowledge with their peers. Burst the Bubble programs are offered during Winter Term and are open to all students at Elon University. Burst the Bubble programs do not include homework, tests, outside assignments or grades. There is no faculty or staff involvement in teaching the programs.
BTB 001: African Dance
Instructor: Edith Veremu
Tuesdays 5 – 6 pm
This course will explore various African dances as well as the cultures from which these dances originate. No prior experience or knowledge is necessary.
BTB 002: Bursting the Heteronormative Bubble
Instructor: Jess McDonald

Are you lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, or queer (LGBTQ) and tired of people assuming you’re straight and/or gender normative? Do you have a queer family member or friend and want to know more about LGBTQ issues? Are you a straight ally who wants to speak out against discrimination and make Elon a more welcoming place? “Bursting the Heteronormative Bubble” will offer a safe space for students to engage in an open dialogue about their experiences being LGBTQ or straight allies at Elon. Nothing LGBTQ or allied is off-topic, and everyone is invited! We’ll determine the contours of our guided discussions based on interest. (Membership and topics discussed are confidential).
BTB 003: Body Language: Learn how to read it and use it
Instructor: Logan Dunn
Tuesdays and Fridays 5:30 – 6:30 pm
Discover how to read attitudes and emotions through behavior. We’ll look into common gestures of liars, courtship gestures of women and men, how to use nonverbal cues to communicate more effectively and get the reactions you want. This workshop breaks down body language into detailed sections about the power of your hands, smiles and laughter, evaluation and deceit signals, eye signals, how to build rapport, courtship and attraction signals, office politics, and many more. What you learn depends on what you’re interested in!
BTB 004: Aeromodelism: The Art of Flying Remote Control Airplanes
Instructor: Christopher Spalding
Mondays and Wednesdays 5:00 – 6:30 pm
This workshop will teach students the basics of purchasing, putting together and flying an actual model size airplane via remote control. The basics of flying will be explained and different types of models that a pilot would be able to choose from and why. The course will be taught with virtual flight simulators that allows its students to practice all types of flying modes (beginner, acrobatic, model and even R/C Helicopter flying). After this class you will be able to start up on some real flying experience with your own model.
BTB 005: Stomping on the Beat: Stepping 10

This course is designed to present a series of classes that will allow students a more in-depth view and understanding of stepping as an art form along with the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. here at Elon University.
BTB 006: Event Planning 1-2-3: Ready? Go!

Wednesdays 4:30 – 5:30 pm
This class will have three sessions and each will describe how to plan a different type of event. The class will be designed to attract other student leaders and students interested in event planning as a career. Each session will walk students through the steps of planning an event and give students the chance to deal with planning events of different genres and troubleshooting.
BTB 007: South Park Politics

We’ll be watching a politically themed episode of South Park in each class and discussing the issues brought up in the show.
BTB 009: Computer Literacy, Basics and More
Instructor: John Minshall
Tuesdays 5 – 6 pm
Topics in this workshop will range from Websites to Photoshop to building PCs, and much more. Using participant’s interests as a guide, we will navigate the world of computers together.
BTB 010: Learn How to Irish Step Dance
Instructors: Catherine Falvey and Kerry Kurkjian
Mondays and Wednesdays 4:45 – 5:45 pm
Learn the basics of Irish Step Dancing and become the Lord of the Dance in no time! No prior experience is needed. This class will be extremely fun and energizing. Please join us, do a little jig, and get a great work out in the meantime!
