Voting in Alamance County, North Carolina General Information
You can only vote in one place and will need to decide whether you will choose to vote using your permanent address or your university address, and vote in elections at that location.
Where Do I Cast My Ballot Here in Alamance County?
To find out the location of your polling place on election day in Alamance County, simply go to the North Carolina Board of Elections Polling Place Search website and confirm your polling place before you leave to vote. Note that the Elon campus is divided into two precincts, so this is especially important.
Students who are registered to vote in Alamance County, North Carolina have two options to vote in person:
1.) One-Stop Early Voting (October 17-November 2, 2024)

2.) Election Day (November 5, 2024)
A shuttle will run from the Center for the Arts to local polling places from 8:00am-7:00pm.
What Do I Need to Bring With Me to Vote Here in Alamance County?
ALL students need to bring an acceptable photo ID. A list of acceptable photo IDs can be found below.
Off-campus students need to bring proof of residence (see below) if they are doing same day voter registration at an early voting site.
Off-campus students need to bring proof of residence (see below) on election day if their original registration application was not confirmed.
Students Living On-Campus Should Bring:
- Beginning in 2023, voters in North Carolina must show an acceptable photo ID when they check in at their voting site during early voting or on Election Day to confirm identity. A list of acceptable photo IDs can be found below.
Note: Each polling site has a booklet containing Elon student on-campus addresses and physical street addresses. Students can ask a poll worker to use this booklet to verify their campus residence.
Students Living Off-Campus Should Bring:
- Beginning in 2023, voters in North Carolina must show an acceptable photo ID when they check in at their voting site during early voting or on Election Day to confirm identity. A list of acceptable photo IDs can be found below.
- If the student lives off-campus, the voter will have to provide one of the following Help America Vote Act (HAVA) documents (current within 6 months) with their name and address along with their photo ID:
- Current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck stub, government paycheck, or other government document (property tax bill, car registration, hunting and fishing license) showing the voter’s name and current address in Alamance County.
North Carolina Voter ID Requirement: In-Person Voting
Beginning in 2023, voters must show an acceptable photo ID when they check in at their voting site during early voting or on Election Day. Election workers check to see if the picture on the ID reasonably resembles the voter. The address on the photo ID does not have to match the voter registration records.
If the voter does not show an acceptable ID, the voter may proceed in one of the two following ways:
- Vote with an ID Exception Form and a provisional ballot, or
- Vote with a provisional ballot and return to the Alamance County Board of Elections office with their photo ID by the day before county canvass. (For municipal elections in September and October, this deadline is the Monday following Election Day. For all other elections, the deadline is the second Thursday following Election Day.)
Acceptable Photo IDs for Voting in North Carolina
The North Carolina State Board of Elections recognizes any of the following forms of identification that are unexpired, or expired for one year or less:
- Elon Phoenix Voter Card (not a standard Elon Phoenix Card, available in the Phoenix Card office)
- North Carolina driver’s license
- U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport card
- State ID from the NCDMV (also called “non-operator ID”)
- Driver’s license or non-driver ID from another state, District of Columbia or U.S. territory (only if voter registered in North Carolina within 90 days of the election).
Students who plan to vote in North Carolina who do not have a North Carolina issued driver license or any of the forms of ID above can obtain a special Elon Phoenix Voter Card. This card, provided at no cost by Elon University, has been approved by the North Carolina State Board of Elections. Pick up an Elon Phoenix Voter Card from the Phoenix Card office in Oaks McCoy Commons (Room 201) Monday-Friday between 8:30am-11:30am and 2:00pm-4:30pm. Once you obtain this card it will serve as your Phoenix Card and full time student ID. Obtaining this voter card does not automatically register you to vote.
Difficulties at Polling Places on Election Day
If you experience any difficulties when voting at your polling place on Election Day, please let the polling place staff that you would like to speak to the Chief Judge. If you feel voter intimidation has taken place, please take a photo to document the situation to share with the Chief Judge.
What If I Want To Vote Here in Alamance County?
A person can only vote where he or she is registered.
If you do choose to vote in Alamance County, you must use both a physical street address AND a campus box for your address. For students living on-campus, your physical street address can be found under Select a Residence Hall address on the TurboVote page or by clicking here.
Are There Consequences of Voting in Alamance County?
Each student’s situation is different. If you’re from out-of-state, please talk with your parents/guardians and learn about any potential limitations or requirements in your home state and North Carolina by using the Campus Vote Project Student Guide before deciding to register using your university address.
The North Carolina State Board of Elections provides this information specifically about college students:
College students can register and vote in the jurisdiction of their residence. A registered voter may only have one residence. If the college student considers his or her school address to be his or her residence, the college student may register and vote in the county where the school is located.
What If I Voted in a Previous Election Using My Address Here in Alamance County and Have Moved to Another Alamance County Address Since Then?
Students can present at a One Stop Early Voting site and may change their address and vote on the same visit.
Using TurboVote, complete a new North Carolina voter registration form using your new address. You must use both a physical street address AND a campus box for your address. Towards the bottom of the form, in the section entitled Please fill out the sections below if they apply to you, provide the address under which you were last registered in the section labeled B.
