Voting in Guilford County, North Carolina General Information
You can only vote in one place and will need to decide whether you will choose to vote using your permanent address or your university address, and vote in elections at that location.
Where Do I Cast My Ballot in Guilford County?
To find out the location of your polling place on election day in Guilford County, simply go to the North Carolina Board of Elections Polling Place Search website and confirm your polling place before you leave to vote. Note that the Elon campus is divided into two precincts, so this is especially important.
Students who are registered to vote in Guilford County, North Carolina have two options to vote in person:
1.) One-Stop Early Voting (October 17-November 2, 2024)

What Do I Need to Bring With Me to Vote in Guilford County?
ALL students need to bring an acceptable photo ID. A list of acceptable photo IDs can be found below.
Off-campus students need to bring proof of residence (see below) if they are doing same day voter registration at an early voting site.
Off-campus students need to bring proof of residence (see below) on election day if their original registration application was not confirmed.
Students Should Bring:
- Beginning in 2023, voters in North Carolina must show an acceptable photo ID when they check in at their voting site during early voting or on Election Day to confirm identity. A list of acceptable photo IDs can be found below.
- A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing the voter’s name and current address in Guilford County.
North Carolina Voter ID Requirement: In-Person Voting
Beginning in 2023, voters must show an acceptable photo ID when they check in at their voting site during early voting or on Election Day. Election workers check to see if the picture on the ID reasonably resembles the voter. The address on the photo ID does not have to match the voter registration records.
If the voter does not show an acceptable ID, the voter may proceed in one of the two following ways:
- Vote with an ID Exception Form and a provisional ballot, or
- Vote with a provisional ballot and return to the Guilford County Board of Elections office with their photo ID by the day before county canvass. (For municipal elections in September and October, this deadline is the Monday following Election Day. For all other elections, the deadline is the second Thursday following Election Day.)
Acceptable Photo IDs for Voting in North Carolina
The North Carolina State Board of Elections recognizes any of the following forms of identification that are unexpired, or expired for one year or less:
- North Carolina driver’s license
- U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport card
- State ID from the NCDMV (also called “non-operator ID”)
- Driver’s license or non-driver ID from another state, District of Columbia or U.S. territory (only if voter registered in North Carolina within 90 days of the election).
Difficulties at Polling Places on Election Day
If you experience any difficulties when voting at your polling place on Election Day, please let the polling place staff know that you would like to speak to the Chief Judge. If you feel voter intimidation has taken place, please take a photo to document the situation to share with the Chief Judge.
Are There Consequences of Voting in Guilford County?
Each student’s situation is different. If you’re from out-of-state, please talk with your parents/guardians and learn about any potential limitations or requirements in your home state and North Carolina by using the Campus Vote Project Student Guide before deciding to register using your university address.
The North Carolina State Board of Elections provides this information specifically about college students:
College students can register and vote in the jurisdiction of their residence. A registered voter may only have one residence. If the college student considers his or her school address to be his or her residence, the college student may register and vote in the county where the school is located.
What If I Voted in a Previous Election Using My Address Here in Guilford County and Have Moved to Another Guilford County Address Since Then?
Students can present at a One Stop Early Voting site and may change their address and vote on the same visit.
Using TurboVote, complete a new North Carolina voter registration form using your new address. Towards the bottom of the form, in the section entitled Please fill out the sections below if they apply to you, provide the address under which you were last registered in the section labeled B.
