Summer Race, Reflection & Discussion Series (in-person & virtual offerings)

Wednesday, June 12, 2024, 12:00-1:30 p.m. – McCoy Commons, Oaks 212

The 2024 Summer Race, Reflection and Discussion Series for faculty and staff is a book read of Robin DiAngelo’s Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm. The purpose of the series is to engage in constructive discussions on race, race relations, racial inequities and their effects on our campus community. Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm explores the concept of “nice racism,” which refers to subtle, well-intentioned forms of racism perpetuated by progressive or well-meaning white people. DiAngelo argues that even those who consider themselves allies in the fight against racism can inadvertently contribute to racial harm through their actions, attitudes, and behaviors. Overall, “Nice Racism” offers a critical examination of how racism operates in contemporary society and challenges readers to confront their own biases and complicity to work towards a more just and equitable world. The book sign-up process is closed. However, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the summer discussions. The discussions will address the following themes: White Fragility; Subtle Forms of Racism; Progressive Racism; Structural Racism; Accountability and Action. If you have any questions about the 2024 Summer Race, Reflection, and Discussion Series, email Carla Fullwood (cfullwood@elon.edu), Sylvia Muñoz (munozs@elon.edu), Jill McSweeney (jmcsweeney@elon.edu), Joan Ruelle (jruelle@elon.edu) or Ann Flaherty (aflaherty2@elon.edu).

Lunch will be provided for registered attendees. Oaks 212 is located in the McCoy Commons building (same building and floor as the Phoenix Office).
