NPHC and MGC Membership Intake
Elon University’s National Pan-Hellenic Council governs the historically African-American fraternities and sororities. Its purpose is to create and maintain high standards in the life of fraternities and sororities; perpetuate constructive fraternity and sorority relationships; foster an understanding of the structure and method of operation among the affiliate organizations; address, coordinate, and develop action strategies of mutual concern to the affiliate organizations; and serve as the conduit for such action plans as may be developed. There are currently 8 NPHC chapters (4 fraternities and 4 sororities) recognized at Elon University.
Additionally, Elon University’s Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) is a governing body for culturally-based fraternities and sororities that aims to improve the campus climate by promoting diversity and unity. The Council’s purpose is to further unify the chapters and members and to create inclusive spaces for the communities they represent while providing service and educational opportunities to all on campus. The MGC is committed to promoting scholarship and celebrating leadership of individuals and chapters.
Membership Intake is the backbone of continuity for NPHC and MGC chapters. Different from the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association, there is no formal recruitment period for NPHC and MGC. Recruitment tactics and initiation procedures for new members are unique to each NPHC and MGC organization.
Traditionally, each chapter hosts educational programming throughout the semester and offers ample opportunity to meet and connect with members before making the personal decision to join. Each respective organization conducts a covert process until the “coming out” of their new members which is open to the public.
To pursue membership in a particular NPHC or MGC organization, please contact the chapter president or other student leader in that organization for more information. Exploring options? Contact Quintin Tucker, Associate Director of Student Involvement, at qtucker2@elon.edu or 336-278-7214.
