Managing Your Health While at Elon
As the fall semester gets underway, we want to provide important resources for managing your health and wellbeing. Please read the information and complete the recommended steps. Completing these steps now will provide access to critical resources for managing your health and wellbeing as well as improving access to services if you experience illness or injury.
If you have questions about any of these resources e-mail us at deanofstudents@elon.edu and we will route your inquiry to the correct office.

Manage Your Health
Starting college often means taking on new responsibilities, including managing your own health. While it might not be the first thing you think of, having a well-stocked health kit can provide timely relief for minor illnesses and help avoid late-night panicked calls.
Elon University, in partnership with Cone Health, operates an acute injury/illness center staffed by MDs, NPs, and PAs. Please note that Student Health Services does not offer 24/7 care and operates on an appointment basis. While many students can be seen the same day, there may be instances where appointments are scheduled for the following day. Students are required to present their current health insurance card at registration. For information on insurance filing and billing, visit Elon Student Health Services.
Elon offers 24/7 virtual medical and mental health support through TimelyCare, available to students across the US at no cost. TimelyCare is a valuable resource, especially when Student Health Services is at capacity or closed. For more details, visit TimelyCare Services.
Essential Wellness Steps Before Arriving:
- Set up MyChart: Follow instructions at MyChart Setup. MyChart allows you to manage your health and share information with others.
- Download the TimelyCare app: Set up your account via TimelyCare App.
- Identify a local pharmacy: Add this information to your MyChart account. Find local pharmacies at Pharmacy Resources.
- Download the RecWell app: Access it at RecWell App.
- Review wellness websites:
- Prepare a medical self-care kit: Include items based on personal health needs and preferences. A suggested kit might contain:
- Over-the-counter medications: headache, fever, pain relievers, digestive aids, cold/flu treatments, allergy remedies, first aid supplies.
- Sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, thermometer.
- Prescribed medications (never share), vitamins, health insurance card, contact details for doctors, spare glasses/contact lenses, and a safe for medications.
- Annual flu vaccine and updated COVID-19 vaccines (available on campus and at local pharmacies).
Students should keep these items on hand, though some OTC items are also available at Fountain Market in Clohan Hall and Barnes & Noble in Downtown Elon.
When to Seek Treatment
For most minor illnesses and injuries, you do not need to visit Student Health Services or other medical facilities. Many issues can be managed independently, and TimelyCare is a good option for virtual consultations. However, seek emergency assistance immediately by calling 9-1-1 for the following situations:
- Persistent bleeding
- Breathing problems
- Broken or severely dislocated bones/joints
- Significant changes in mental status (e.g., confusion, unusual behavior)
- Chest pain
- Choking
- Coughing up or vomiting blood
- Loss of consciousness
- Suicidal or homicidal thoughts
- Head or spine injury
- Seizures
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Serious injuries from accidents, burns, smoke inhalation, or deep wounds
- Sudden severe pain, dizziness, weakness, or vision changes
- Swallowed poison
- Severe upper abdominal pain or pressure
