Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

We need … a firm idea of the kind of media environment we would like to see in the future.

Predictor: Rheingold, Howard

Prediction, in context:

A 1993 article for Time magazine paints a general picture of the Internet, quoting Howard Rheingold. It says: ”Others see the period of uncertainty ahead as a rare opportunity for citizens to shape their own technological destiny. ‘We need … a firm idea of the kind of media environment we would like to see in the future,’ warns Howard Rheingold in his new book, ‘The Virtual Community.’ While it may be difficult for communities as diverse as those on the Internet to set their own agenda, it seems increasingly likely that if they don’t, someone else will do it for them.”

Biography:

Howard Rheingold, one of the first writers to illuminate the ideals and foibles of virtual communities, published a webzine called Electric Minds and wrote “Virtual Reality,” “Smart Mobs” and “Virtual Community.” He also was the editor of Whole Earth Review and the Millennium Whole Earth Catalog. (Research Scientist/Illuminator.)
