This promised land is what the cross-generation group is all about.’ Kelly’s promised land began when he helped form The WELL, a modem-connected San Francisco community of computer users. The WELL is a homey, intellectual suburb of the Internet and has become a model for online sociology. The culture of The WELL made Kelly want to start a magazine that did the same in print. ‘My gut certainty is that there is something important happening here,’ he said. ‘I saw that happening on The WELL. Instead of mindless chatter, people started having real conversations, developing bonds … It’s not the end-all, but nontheless, it won’t go away.'”
