Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

The common vision is we want to be able to get anything, anytime, anywhere – total ‘net capability … My gut certainty is that there is something important happening here … Instead of mindless chatter, people started having real conversations, developing bonds. It’s not the end-all, but nontheless, it won’t go away.

Predictor: Kelly, Kevin

Prediction, in context:

In a 1994 article for The Modesto Bee, Rusty Coats, interviews Kevin Kelly of Wired magazine. Coats writes: ”Nowhere is this spirit of digital democracy stronger than in the pages of Wired magazine, a San Francisco startup that began as the People magazine of the digital generation and now stands as the movement’s Bible. ‘We have two sets of readers: Young ‘net surfers in their 20s and older has-been cyberhippies in their 40s,’ said Wired editor Kevin Kelly. ‘The common vision is we want to be able to get anything, anytime, anywhere – total ‘net capability. This promised land is what the cross-generation group is all about.’ Kelly’s promised land began when he helped form The WELL, a modem-connected San Francisco community of computer users. The WELL is a homey, intellectual suburb of the Internet and has become a model for online sociology. The culture of The WELL made Kelly want to start a magazine that did the same in print. ‘My gut certainty is that there is something important happening here,’ he said. ‘I saw that happening on The WELL. Instead of mindless chatter, people started having real conversations, developing bonds … It’s not the end-all, but nontheless, it won’t go away.'”
