Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

Whether you like it or not, there are people in Washington that have more control over your future than Microsoft does.

Predictor: Dyson, Esther

Prediction, in context:

In a 1993 article for The New York Times, Steve Lohr writes about the 1993 PC Forum in Phoenix, quoting Esther Dyson, editor of the newsletter Release 1.0 and organizer of the conference. Lohr writes: ”Computing’s next step required a marriage of computer services and the highly regulated world of telecommunications. Esther Dyson, editor of the newsletter Release 1.0 and organizer of the conference [PC Forum, 1993], caught people’s attention here by saying that the regulatory issue could become even more significant than the industry’s current obsession, Microsoft, the company that rules the software business the way IBM once controlled the computer industry. ‘Whether you like it or not,’ Ms. Dyson said, ‘there are people in Washington that have more control over your future than Microsoft does.'”

Biography:

Esther Dyson was founding editor of Release 1.0 and a consultant and expert on computing and high-tech applications. She served as the president of EDventure Holdings. She founded the PC Forum, an annual conference and industry event. She had the highest profile of the women of technology in the 1990s. (Futurist/Consultant.)
