Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

Almost every market you can conceive of will work far more efficiently because it will be mediated electronically. You are talking about something that is very fundamental.

Predictor: Gates, Bill

Prediction, in context:

In a 1993 article for The Boston Globe, Ronald Rosenberg interviews the chairman and co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, over dinner in Boston, just before the fall 1993 Boston Computer Society meeting. An excerpt follows: ”Q. How will the ‘information highway’ effect most people?” ”A. It will mean something very dramatic. It’s going to mean the ability to go out and communicate with your kids’ teachers or to have teachers find each other. If your physician prescribes some medicine, you will find out what it is and what does it mean. If you want a quick medical consultation, there’s video connection. You may want to find people with common opinions, maybe, or common interests, such as to go hiking with, or to form some political group and go out and pursue some goal. These things are going to be extremely straightforward. When you’re deciding what book to read, you can see if your friends have chosen it and see what they think of it. If you sit at home and choose to watch a movie, you see the reviews, see what other people have seen and hear what they have to say. It can try to help you pick a movie, based on what you have watched in the past and how you regarded that experience. Almost every market you can conceive of will work far more efficiently because it will be mediated electronically. You are talking about something that is very fundamental.”
