Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

It’s up to citizens to demand our part of the deal. If you dismiss this as a bunch of computer nerds, you do your grandchildren a disservice.

Predictor: Rheingold, Howard

Prediction, in context:

In a 1993 article for The Seattle Times, Paul Andrews interviews Howard Rheingold. Andrews writes: ”The products of Vice President Al Gore’s superhighway or a TCI-Bell Atlantic 500-channel TV to the home could prove to sanitize content and erode privacy, Rheingold said in a telephone interview. ‘TCI’s John Malone has stated publicly, “We want to have control of the (data highway TV) box,”‘ Rheingold said. ‘That’s significant.’ … No clear path is indicated for regulating the data highway, Rheingold said. Precisely what form public oversight should take is something that can only emerge with the technology – and public involvement. ‘I’m not here with answers; I’m here with questions,’ he said. ‘People need to contact their local representatives and get involved. It’s up to citizens to demand our part of the deal. If you dismiss this as a bunch of computer nerds, you do your grandchildren a disservice.'”

Biography:

Howard Rheingold, one of the first writers to illuminate the ideals and foibles of virtual communities, published a webzine called Electric Minds and wrote “Virtual Reality,” “Smart Mobs” and “Virtual Community.” He also was the editor of Whole Earth Review and the Millennium Whole Earth Catalog. (Research Scientist/Illuminator.)
