Name: Vince Paldi

Bio: IT professional, systems architect and consultant

Area of Expertise: Technology Developer/Administrator

Topic: Controversial Issues

Headline: There is a great need for balance

Nutshell: Quality and new communication methods are necessary to cope in the new world. Everything will undergo change.

Vision:

What we need:

(1) Quality

Under this term I mean the following:

– the balance between the used efforts plus resources and the achieved results

– secure and reliable information channels in both directions

– you get the exact and precise information without junk and advertisements

(2) Personalization

– new and effective way of communication between you and your equipment. Forget traditional keyboard and mouse, because they are slow and require too much space. Recognize gestures, eye-movement, speech, whatever.

– new, simpler, cheaper equipment than PC’s are necessary. The direction of PDA’s might be good; mobile phone with WAP is definitely wrong

– maybe a new, simplified language, which can bring people close together. The majority of the world does not speak English!

– unified access to Internet-based services (recently I have to manage my almost 100 accounts, user ID’s, passwords – all identifying me at different sites, which is crazy)

– customizable search engines, which not only list sources, but also able to combine information from different sources

What we are facing:

(1) The end of the traditional media

– Advantage: The market of newspapers and radio/TV newschannels will shrink or vanish, because you get the information what you are interested in on request anytime, anywhere. Investment could go back into real production of goods from the virtual reality of TV/CD/Movie industry

– Disadvantage: I wonder if literature can survive, will we have new Tolstoi, Joyce, Ginsberg or Kertesz and Esterhazy?

(2) Changes in family life

– Advantage: closer relationship between relatives far away

– Disadvantage: losing connections between close family members having more and more individual experiences rather than common ones

(3) Change in work style

– Advantage: cooperation between individuals who do not know each other

– Disadvantage: workplace fellowship, spirit and loyalty decline, people will easily be interchangable

(4) Change in social life

– Advantage: The influence of central news agencies and governmental sources could be lower, since wider spectrum will be available (but don’t forget, money talks, so volunteers and collaboration are necessary to build independence from centralism)

– Disadvantage: Extreme ideas and groups may gain wider support, since their statements will not get immediate criticism on the same channel (do not misunderstand: I do not want anything censored, but want to show the other side of the coin)
