Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

With ISDN bandwidth between PCs, people located anywhere in the world will collaborate as if there were no spatial separation … Consumer manipulation of video will have to wait for ISDN’s successor, the fiber-optic and switch rebuilding that the cable and phone systems are undertaking.

Predictor: Gates, Bill

Prediction, in context:

In a 1993 article for Red Herring magazine, Anthony B. Perkins reports on what Microsoft CEO Bill Gates says at a Q-A session with other technology executives at the European Technology Roundtable Exposition. A portion of one Gates answer: ”With ISDN bandwidth between PCs, people located anywhere in the world will collaborate as if there were no spatial separation. This involves more than just seeing a video of the other person; it’s sharing documents, annotations, and thoughts, casting votes, measuring opinions, and editing language together. People are really underestimating the impact of ISDN for business collaboration. Applying video communication to the consumer market, however, is more difficult. It requires even higher data rates, because the kind of video quality you get from ISDN is not adequate to enable the key consumer application, which is video-on-demand. Consequently, consumer manipulation of video will have to wait for ISDN’s successor, the fiber-optic and switch rebuilding that the cable and phone systems are undertaking.”
