Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

Nobody knows exactly how the information highway is going to unfold … We’re going to have to endure years of speculation and posturing by companies that may or may not bring products to market. It’s going to take a lot of cooperation between companies … No single company is going to dominate the new information highway.

Predictor: Gates, Bill

Prediction, in context:

In a 1993 article for Red Herring magazine, Anthony B. Perkins interviews Microsoft CEO Bill Gates at the European Technology Roundtable Exposition. Gates says: ”Nobody knows exactly how the information highway is going to unfold. Even the most optimistic people say that it will take four to five years for the home market to develop. We’re going to have to endure years of speculation and posturing by companies that may or may not bring products to market. It’s going to take a lot of cooperation between companies. We will be partnering with chip manufacturers; the RBOCs; the consumer electronics companies for their expertise in marketing and manufacturing; and the cable companies, who will provide the bandwidth to make it all possible. And, most important, will be the content companies. Clearly, the profits generated by interactive TV will be split among many companies. No single company is going to dominate the new information highway.”
