Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

Soon the backbone will upgrade to gigabyte speeds, enough to send real-time uncompressed video or a complete encyclopedia in a few seconds. Additional bandwidth will accommodate the increasing number of users, and allow for additional services.

Predictor: Eager, Bill

Prediction, in context:

In his 1994 book “The Information Superhighway Illustrated,” Bill Eager writes about his view of the future: ”The number of new users on the Internet is also significant. Today, as many as two million new users log on to the network each month. This amount of activity requires more points of access, greater bandwidth, friendly graphical user interfaces, and information-searching mechanisms. NSF backbones are now T3 lines, providing 45 megabit-per-second transmission speed. Soon the backbone will upgrade to gigabyte speeds, enough to send real-time uncompressed video or a complete encyclopedia in a few seconds. Additional bandwidth will accommodate the increasing number of users, and allow for additional services.”

Biography:

Bill Eager, an Internet marketing pioneer, wrote many books about the field, including the best-sellers “The Information Payoff” and “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Online Marketing.” He was also known for his presentations and workshops about technology at national conferences.
