The following is from a 1994 article in Communications Daily about points made in a study by the Clinton administration’s NII [National Information Infrastructure] Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights: ”The report recognized that advances in technology that cause new problems also will contribute to new solutions. It said there were more sophisticated means of protecting access to works at several levels, and that encryption technologies also could be employed to protect copyrights, while algorithms could produce ‘digital signatures’ that would determine authenticity.”
