Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

Europe has no comparable project [to America’s national communications infrastructure] and is “unlikely to enter the 21st century with a communications infrastructure that it could call a competitive advantage.”

Predictor: Benhamou, Eric

Prediction, in context:

In a 1993 article about network deficiencies in the United Kingdom’s infrastructure, reporter Victor Keegan of The Guardian quotes Eric Benhamou: ”Eric Benhamou, the president of 3Com corporation, said this month that Europe has no comparable project [to America’s national communications infrastructure] and is ‘unlikely to enter the 21st century with a communications infrastructure that it could call a competitive advantage.’ That’s a friendly American’s way of saying that we’ve missed the boat.”

Biography:

Eric Benhamou chaired the American Electronics Association’s National Information Infrastructure Task Force from 1993-1995, representing 3,000 member companies in the fastest growing segments of the high-technology industry. He later became chairman of the 3Com Corporation, a world leader in networking technologies. (Technology Developer/Administrator.)
