Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

The world of computer networks may be too decentralized to be dominated by one or few companies. In short, the PC business model does not apply to the Internet.

Predictor: Lohr, Steve

Prediction, in context:

In a 1995 article for the New York Times, reporter Steve Lohr comments on Tim Berners-Lee’s views on the subject of commercializing the World Wide Web: ”The [W3T] Consortium’s best hope for keeping the Web open [not dominated by one particular company] is probably neither Mr. Berners-Lee’s commitment nor the good will of consortium members, but the diverse nature of the Internet itself. The world of computer networks may be too decentralized to be dominated by one or few companies. In short, the PC business model does not apply to the Internet … But that concept of openness is likely to be tested by the ‘proprietary extensions’ to Web browsing programs, like those produced by Netscape and Microsoft.”
