The prediction, in brief:

Java is going to be the DOS of the 90s. It may not be perfect, but neither was DOS in its first iterations. Its chief benefit is its ubiquity … with Java, content wins.

Predictor: Schmidt, Eric

Prediction, in context:

In a 1995 article for Sun World, a publication of Sun Microsystems, Erica Liederman talks with Eric Schmidt, chief technology officer for Sun Microsystems, regarding Java. Liederman writes: ”Sun’s recent contribution to the world of object-oriented programming is destined to become as integral to communication and commerce during the next century as telephone has become during the current one. Pitched explicitly as a tool for programmers on the World Wide Web, this new language, christened ‘Java,’ is likely to change more than just the way programmers hack code. Here is an overview of some … insights and predictions for the new computing era. Eric Schmidt, Sun vice president and chief technology officer: ‘As of today, there are 11 million URLs (World Wide Web Uniform Resource Locator). By the year 2000, there will be 151.6 million documents. There are now 18 million Web users in the U.S. and Canada … Java is going to be the DOS of the 90s. It may not be perfect, but neither was DOS in its first iterations. Its chief benefit is its ubiquity … with Java, content wins.”
